17 ackley hornet and 17 k hornet
« on: December 31, 2009, 06:20:05 PM »
are they the same round or different?   i was thinking about getting a 17 ackley hornet and i see that there is a factory encore barrel listed as a 17 k hornet and was wondering if it is just a different name for the ackley hornet?

Kilbourn was a gunsmith from New York and developed the K hornet with 40 degree shoulders in 1940.

rcbs lists different dies for the 17ah and the 17k so i guess they are different.   there looks to be a lot of small bore info on that saubier site,  thanks roper.

Best thing maybe call the guys that are selling the barrel and ask if they have a reamer print might have one for the Ackley also.

they emailed me and said that the 17ah has a 30 degree shoulder and the 17 k hornet has a 35 degree shoulder.   not much difference.

Personally I suspect the K-Hornet to be the far more popular of the two. You hear little of the AH in comparison to the K-Hornet.

In the .22 version the K-Hornet is the most popular. BUT...in the .17 version the Ackley Hornet takes the cake by about 90%.

attached is a reamer print of the .17AH

The 17 K and the 17 AH are different rounds. If I rember correctly the difference is in the shoulder angle. The 17 AH is my all time favorite small varmint round. With 10.4 gr. of powder I`m pushing a 19 gr. Calhoon bullet at 3,600 fps. Max. point blank range, plus or minus 2 1/2 in., 290 yrds. A real little lazer, but presure jumps very fast some when working up a load you need to go in .1 gr. steps.

There are two K Hornets on Steve's pages...35 degree shoulder and 40 degree shoulder. Steve also has one Improved Hornet (25 degree shoulder). I think the 40 degree is more popular.

I've got just over 6,000 rounds through my Ackley Hornet [17] and it's still going strong! It is my favorite rifle.
Walt Berger [bullet maker]said it was his fav, too!
