CHOICES & OPINIONS
« on: July 01, 2010, 05:33:55 AM »
I don't care for rollers as carry guns because they don't carry well sans a scabbard.
I prefer Semi-autos because of load and quickness.
The best safety you can own is a trigger finger.
I Like Sigs as the best, out of the box firearm available.
I like 1911's becasue of feel and pointability.
I like all of my weapons--from shotguns to pistols to be as reliable as i can make them.
I like Smiths and rely on their skills.
I like S&W guns--period.
Colts carry a special place in my heart.
STI makes a mighty fine 1911--I still have a Smith do magic to it.
I like short, GI triggers.
I like Arched mainsprings in my 1911's.
I like Heinie Slant Pro fixed sights on my hand-guns.
I don't care for adjustable sights on my hand-guns.
I love blued finishes and hard Chrome for durability.
I dislike camo anything.
Baer handguns are TOOTOOTOO tight for my needs.
Any, all steel, 1911 can be made a dangerous weapon.
I like dangerous weapons.
I dislike, and avoid, a polymer weapon.
Glocks will not be in a conversation with me as I dis-like almost every thing about them except their reliability.
The .327 mag SMITH & WESSON has found my favor.
I don't care for small handguns and BIG calibers.
I generally don't care for mouse guns.
BIG, big calibers don't impress me.
Running out of time.
Blessings

I like LONG triggers on my 1911's...and I DO like adjustable sights.
Otherwise...GREAT minds truly DO think alike!

Could this be an "Old Guy" thing??  Seen it, done it, here's the fruits of my wisdom?

I'd personally  add;  I like Keith style SWC's no matter the revolver ctg.
Paper ballistics may be impressive, but PLACEMENT is what handgun hunting is all about.
I absolutely abhor optics on any handgun.

Have a few more but don't want to start any pissin' matches over my personal views.

Bill,

The full sized (service) S&W M&P 40/.357 fits just about all of your criteria with the exception of the polymer frame.
It holds 15+1 rounds of .40 S&W or .357 Sig.
If you get the M&P in .40 S&W you can get a .357 Sig barrel for around $150 and have a dual caliber platform and the nice thing is you use the same magazines for either caliber.
IMO the M&P is as pointable as a 1911. Comes with 3 different sized back strap inserts for a custom fit.
Proving to be very dependable as more and more law enforcement agencies are going to them.
There are no safeties to fiddle with.  (I agree with you Bill, your finger and your gray matter are the best safeties there are. )  Besides that it makes for a very smooth gun with no levers and such to dig into your love handles when you carry Mexican.
The trigger breaks at around 6# and is crisp, more like a 1911's trigger than a Glock's.  After market triggers or a little smith work can easily make them even sweeter.
The slide is hardened stainless with a proprietary 'Melonite' black finish. A heat-treatment process that protects the surface while going into the metal itself. (You get the durability of stainless with a blued look)
Novak LoMount rear, steel ramp front (tritium night sights also available)

Worth a look. Who knows Bill, after shooting one you may decide Tupperware isn't so bad after all.

The post was not about changing any choices and opinions----they are just mine.
I read---and post a lot---about all of these things in one place or another. The thought process--for this post--was to compile a good amount of my choices and opinions int one post and, perhaps, to encourage others to do the same.
I didn't even get into parts choices or specifics about some of the other things--or, why--for the most part.
I know that some disagree with me on a few OR many---that is OK------You boys can be wrong if you wish  ;D :-*.
I would still like to read definitive views of others.

There shouldn't be any p - - - - - matches over William's post, he clearly labeled it as "choices and opinions" and I'm sure he believes as I do that one's choice or opinion is entirely personal and entirely their own..

  Reading William's list I found that;

  1) I am not into handguns near as much as William is.

 2) Most of the handguns I have left would probably come under William's "mouse gun" category.  :D

 3) I shoot rimfire more than I do centerfires. ::)

 4) Autos for quick followup shot.

 5) Bolt for precision.

 6) Stocks; for looks I like wood.

 7) For hunting esp in rain, snow & ice, I like synthetics.

 8) My rifles are primarily used for hunting.

 9) I admit, single shots.. esp H&R, hold a challenge/fascination for me, love their simplicity and compactness.

 10) have been a longtime Ruger & Marlin fan, now leaning more toward CZ & Savage.

 11) Still a NEF/H&R booster.

 12) More inclined toward "shot placement" than "magnum slam".

 13) Small game & varmints are just as much fun for me as big game.

 14) Almost never use shotgun, and don't hunt things where shotgun is required ( it's the "precision" hangup).

 15) I like the smell of Eley primed ammo.  ;) :D Yes, I really do !

Nobody here has to agree..it's just quirky me... ;D

I like revolvers. Double and single action.

I prefer revolvers, because of their reliability.

I like Rugers. I think they are the most gun for the money. Some others are more refined, but you pay for it.

I do like 1911's, because of the way they fit my hand and their flatness.

I like flat mainsprings.

I like adjustable sights on handguns, except snub revolvers. I dislike scopes on handguns.

I like stainless.

I also hate camo on anything, except hunting clothing and my shotgun I use for turkey hunting.

The 870 is my favorite shotgun, for hunting and home defense. Never have seen one break or malfunction.

I like my .45XD. Even thought its polymer. I do prefer steel over polymer.

I like .357's and .45's for carry.

I love shooting .357, .41, and .44 mags. Don't really care for smaller calibers. I kind of like recoil. (is that normal?)

Handgun I would like to own, but a bit costly---Freedom Arms .454

For hunting over a bean field my Rem. 700 25-06 is my favorite. Its my favorite varmiter also.

For hunting in the bush, my favorite is my Encore .45-70

If everyone liked the same things. I doubt there would be as many options, like we have. Options are one of the many things that are great about guns and shooting sports.

I hate carrying a heavy pistol around, but not as much as the idea of using a LCP.  I don't own nor do I want a full size pistol, to ungainly for my uses.

An unabashed SIG fan here, I do believe there are plenty of reliable brands out there.  I have chosen to stick with one manual of arms, I am a creature of habit. It took me too long to get where I'm at with the SIG to try and include another operating system in my head.

I like the post and dot sights, and have no use for adjustables.

I would no more carry without a holster than carry with the hammer back.

40 S&W is what I have settled on, either the 9mm or .45 guys are right and I won't be wrong by much either way. (Besides that, the wife can't stand to see a full box of 9mm on the shelf and I would never have my own stash.)

Sorry, didn't think I was starting a "pXXXXing match" with anyone.  I may have misinterpreted your post Bill.  I thought that you were contemplating adding a new piece (in a platform you don't currently own) to your collection and was looking for some input.

If you were looking for members "choices & opinions" i will share mine here...

I like both wheelguns and semi autos.

I like classic single action six guns and high tech defensive arms and competition guns.

I'm a traditionalist of sorts and like my SA wheelguns blued with wood or bone grip panels.

My preference in materials for other types of guns runs the full gambit.  I think polymers and stainless do have their places in certain applications such as carry or hunting rigs for weight reduction and weather durability.

For just plinking and having fun I think nothing beats a good .22lr for the most bang(s) for the buck. You can spend the afternoon shooting for under $25.  Doesn't matter to me if it is a SA six gun like my Ruger Super Single Six or an auto loader like my Ruger MKII Target, .22s are just plain fun.

In Concealed Carry weaponry .38sp or 9mm are the smallest caliber I am comfortable with.  I like these in small packages with fixed sights and no safeties for their simplicity and concealability.  I also like stainless steal and hard chrome for CC for it's durability.  My S&W M60 and Kel-Tec P11 currently fill the bill for me in this area.

For home/auto defense where concealability is not an issue I like larger but not monster calibers such as .40S&W, .357Sig, and .45ACP. in service sized platforms.  Again I subscribe to the KISS ideology in these types weapons preferring DA revolvers and autos without all manor of safeties, decokcers, etc.  Just aim and squeeze if you please.  Adjustable sights belong on target and hunting guns not on combat arms IMO.  My new S&W M&P .40 is my current choice here.

This about covers my thoughts on handguns.  My thoughts on long guns would fill another page.
