My new/old Remington .260
« on: May 19, 2010, 03:43:10 PM »
Figured it had become a bit slow around here so I'd throw up a pic or two of my new .260.  The rifle started out as an SS 5R in .308 a few years ago.  Now for the specs:

-Remmy 700 action trued
-Broughton 5C, 26" 7.7 HV
-APA LB brake
-Badger recoil lug
-Manners T4 stock
-Nightforce 20MOA base
-IOR V-Tac rings
-Sightron SIII 6-24x50 MD

So far I've found the load seating depth that the rifle likes with 140VLDs.  Now it is time to play with powder types/charges.  Best so far is .518" for five shots, but I'm barely into load development here.  The action was trued and tube was screwed on by Ray Bowman, who built Charles Ballard's record-breaking F-Class .284  http://www.6mmbr.com/gunweek088.html .  I managed to do a decent job of bedding it and working the trigger down to an acceptable level.

Once I get a chance to really get into some loads I'm sure I'll be able to wring out a bit more accuracy from this.

That is one very sweet rifle. May I ask where you found the stock at. Take care Dale

Nice.  I'm guessing you wouldn't have to do much walking to go antelope hunting with that.

Diggler...that is a really sweet set-up.  Should be real pleasant to shoot and apparently very accurate.  Would make a great long range coyote gun as well as for bigger game.

I appreciate the replys gents.  I would hope to hot have to walk too far with that rifle as it weighs about 16.5lbs with scope.  Dale, the stock is a Manners T4 www.mannersstocks.com .  I've tried a few McMillans, and wanted to give a Manners a try this time.  I like the foreend being level with the barrel for target shooting off of bags/bipod (the main reason I loved my McM A4).  For a hunting stock I'd probably go with something that had some taper to it in order to be able to have a bit more "immediate" adjustment when shooting from various supported positions.

Swampman,  I really enjoyed my rifle when it was a 5R.  The barrel cleaned pretty easily compared to most factory barrels, and the rifle was a very solid .5MOA performer at 100 and 200yds, sometimes even pushing into the .3 and .4 range but usually around .5 given weather conditions.  I someday might add another 5R to the safe, next time though it might be a .300WM or a .223.  Probably just a pipe dream though.  I did find that the H-S stocks didn't fit my shooting hand too well, but with a skim bedding job consitancy from one H-S stock to the next (I had two different ones on there) was but a quarter-minute apart at 100yds.

Nice rifle eastbank, nothing like blending the old with the new sometimes.  Plus its always nice to have something different from every other guy on the line.
