Home Land Security Check
« on: May 13, 2010, 05:25:14 AM »
Well yesterday I went thru. my first HS check. I was getting on a ferry to cross the James River . I was in line and loading when a uniformed person stopped me and she ask if i knew what a Home land Security check was . I said no . Then she ask if i would allow it . I wanted to see what it was and had broken no laws so I allowed it . I was ask to step out the truck and open the tool box . They searched it , then took looked under the truck from front to back . Then told me to have a nice day and away i went . They didn't look under or behind the seat , in fact they never looked in the cab . They didn't see the handgun or ammo in the cab stored behind the seat or the one i carry legal in my pocket . There were no signs stating one could not carry on board . They never ask my name or for ID . It was a company truck so they have no idea who i was.
Boy ! was that to make us feel safer ? OR to train / brainwash us into getting searched as being a normal part of future life ? BTW i was picked at random , I was one of the 2 out of about 30 that was checked .
The uniform was SWAT/Military looking and dark blue pants , gray shirt and black boots . Had on police style duty belts with stuff all the way around . Yep a full sized Glock also and extra mags .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

After reading this I feel so much safer now... yeah right.

I wonder what she would have done if you did not consent to the Homeland Security Check?

Not sure what they would have done . I have been stopped so they could check my fuel to see if i was running un taxed fuel. If you refuse that little check its $2000.00 each time you refuse. I could not see the other vehicle they checked as 2 busses blocked my view . There was one other pickup on board though. My son works on a military base sorta near there and they were also searching vehicles that day . I had crossed on the same boat last sunday with no check.
And in Va. a company pick up truck is a high profile vehicle for drinking and driving late in the evening and weekends . But you are right I'm sure as she was looking at a list on a clip board as i pulled up and stopped me .
I still can't get over not asking name or checking ID .

TM7, I've been through the same I-91 checkpoint many times, and have been stopped a couple of times and asked a couple of questions.  One was for my drivers license.  The other, where was I going.  I had two rifles, a shotgun (all empty with actions open), and a loaded handgun in the car, in plain sight.  My pickup had Vermont tags. The officer saw those guns, for certain--and never even mentioned them. My having those there, or anywhere else in Vermont, is my constitutional right, both nationally and in the State of Vermont. This was a routine stop, conducted on every car passing that checkpoint that day. As a US citizen (armed most of the time) a US veteran, and a native Vermonter I don't object at all to the Border Patrol doing their job at that checkpoint.  These days, unless you've got something to hide (do you, TM??) I don't see the problem at all. There's a war on, remember?  That checkpoint is on a main route to both Boston and New York, coming from Canada. If you think that everyone coming down from Canada is a tourist, then you're pretty naive. I for one am glad that DHS is trying to do their job at least somewhere. Of course, anyone trying to smuggle illegal aliens into a "sanctuary city" like Burlington or Brattleboro, or onto some Vermont farm, could certainly be expected to whine that their "civil liberties" were being infringed. Why these checks are being conducted, at certain times, is probably for a good reason, in the interests of national security at that particular time. Too bad they were so lax at the airport in NYC a week or so ago. America got lucky that time.

I got checked 2 weeks ago parking at the airport to pick up my in laws. The TSA person at the gate to parking didn't check ID, didn't look in the passenger area, just opened the back of the SUV, 1 glance and were off. I do think there is merit in asking if this is to train compliance. We sure did it in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The increased police presence in VT might be due to the seeming paradox of rabidly liberal gun owners.

The guards at Ford Island were sound asleep at 0200 when one of my fellow officers rolled through to respond to an emergency. They've civilianized all of it now, so they were fired. When that was a military manned post, security was different, as it should be. That's a sensitive site. But not for my hometown.

The TSA is a joke.

It's all for show, to help Americans get used to following orders.

"Get into the boxcars, we're taking you someplace safe...  As soon as we get there you'll be able to eat and take a shower."

 :P

They may talk of a "New Order" in the  world, but what they have in mind is only a revival of the oldest and worst tyranny.   No liberty, no religion, no hope.   It is an unholy alliance of power and pelf to dominate and to enslave the human race.

The Homeland Security agency is a joke. They are to busy checking normal, every day law abiding Americans, to be able to catch any real terrorists. It took a highly trained tee shirt vendor to alert police of the smoking suv in Times Square. Then the Feds lost track of Faisal Shahzad, the guy that planned to blow up Times Square. He bought a plane ticket, paid cash for it then boarded a plane for a flight to Pakistan. All while on the Federal no fly list. Go figure.
I guess Homeland Security was to busy checking evil white guys, and 70 year old ladies shoes, and purses for fear they might try to blow up a plane. I mean why check out a guy with a name like Faisal Shahzad before he boards a plane. The guys with names like Mike Smith are probably more dangerous.
I wounder how many of these terrorists are running around America with intent to blow Americans up. I would bet that there is a bunch more.
Doesn't it make you feel all warm and fuzzy that we have Homeland Security to track them down.

I'm not going to judge whether Homeland Security is a joke, or not, but at least one situation I am aware of would be a pretty neat gig if you could get it.  There is a particular spot where someone has decided that some high tension power lines and towers are possibly vulnerable to sabotage.  There is a 24/7 watch on these lines which cross the Columbia River.  The watchers have nothing to do all day and all night, but sit on the river and enjoy the wildlife and the scenery.  They have a boat to run around in and they get to dress up like troopers and carry side arms.  I don't know if they are allowed to fish while on duty.

Hey, I just thought of something.  Somebody shot a bald eagle right out near where these guards are posted.  It was shot with a shotgun, but it has survived.  I wonder if those guys are getting a little bored.

Question: Can I search your vehicle?
Response: Question: Do you have a search warrant?
Answer: No, I don't have a search warrant.
Response: Answer: No you may not search my vehicle.
Question: Do you have something to hide?
Answer: NOPE! I just don't want you or anyone else prowlin around in my stuff.
Response: I'll get a search warrant.
Response: I can wait, but get two copies, I want my copy to. Oh yea. While we're waitin I'm gonna call the news media to come watch ;).

It's really not a scenario. It's what EVERY AMERICAN "should do". If they "give in" and let them search without a search warrant, then their makin it harder on the next person that doesn't give in.

Louisville Kentucky Police Dept. tried this with me. All the little mind games, like: If you have nothing to hide what is your problem? Stuff like that. I simple informed the officer and his Sgt. that I had no problem but, they seemed to. They didn't seem to get it when someone said no. They FINALLY let me go.
Was in inconvenient? Yes it was. Was it uncomfortable? Of course it was. Was it the right thing to do? Hell yes it was. But I know my rights, and I want'em.
