My Beagle pup had the bad habbit of running deer. In these parts, that could get a dog shot. I took him out for rabbits today with my friends dogs.
I bought a training collar and have been working on basic comands at home with a mild jolt if he made a fuss over deer in the front yard. Today, we went hunting with my friends pack of beagles. He started on a deer track and I gave him a fair jolt (enough to make him yelp). I called him and he came back.
He started a few rabbits but lost them quickly. The other dogs took up the track until the rabbits holed up. Elmer wasn't sure of the other dogs and didn't really understand the game yet, so he only packed up once at the end of the day.
Any how, We kicked a doe out about 15 ft in front of us at the end of the day. I got the controls out of my pocket and was ready to give Elmer enough of a shock that it would flip him if he went after that doe. Much to my suprise and delight, Elmer ignored it and kept hunting rabbits.
I know it is just one victory and that I will have to remain vigulant, but it is a good start.
