.22WMR Sportster: I'd like to add sights!
« on: May 19, 2010, 06:14:39 PM »
I'd like to add some kind of open sights to my .22WMR Sportster as I ended up with one sans sights.  I was thinking of an aperature sight, such as a Williams and a corresponding front sight added by a gunsmith.  Would anybody have any suggestions on what to start looking at?  Thank you! :)

I'm going through more or less the same exercise with a short barrel .22 lr. I think I'm going to try leaf sights on a short piece of scope base mounted to the scope mount screws. I may dovetail the scope base and put in a set of fold-down sights from a 10/22.

Tim has put together a nice section on sights in the "NEF/H&R Centerfire Rifles" "FAQ and Help" sticky. If you haven't been through that yet it's the best starting spot I've found. Following is from that section:

SIGHTS

PEEP AND FIRESIGHTS
LONG RANGE SIGHTS FOR THE BC and TARGET
SIGHTS AND SCOPE FOR A TOPPER
SIGHTS FOR SHOTGUNS WITHOUT DRILLING & TAPPING
SIGHT HEIGHT VIDEO
Determining Sight Height by Big Blue
BC/Target Front Sight Removal
WGRS Sight Removal
Williams Dovetail Riser

Hope that helps some.

Unless you have real good eyes you wont be able to clear the rear sight for focus if you mount it that far back on the scope rail. The peep would be fine as you let it fuzz and look through the available light in the hole. You will need a tall front, so a dovetailed ramp (that will let you easily change sights) will look best and work well.
