22-250 loads
« on: May 10, 2010, 11:45:49 AM »
I picked up a SB2 22-250 HB ss and fired off some factory Federal 55 grains.I wasn't happy with the results.I had a Bushnell 3200 mounted and everything was tight but they didn't seem to stabilize.Should I try heavier or lighter ammo.It is a NV serial number. What is everyone else shooting?

My wife has one with an NU serial # and it likes 36 & 40 grain bullets the best.  The twist rate for barrels is in the FAQ sticky, I believe it is 1:14 for that year 22-250.  I know my wife's gun is 1:14 because i measured it.  In theory, you use shorter (lighTer) bullets in slower twist barrels, like a 1:14.  The federal factory ammo, 40 grain, with red tips is her guns favorite commerical load.  I think these bullets are VMax but I don't remember for sure and I tossed the MT box.

1 in 14 should stabilize most bullets up to 60 grains at least and also the 70 gr. Speer semi spitzer. Go to the facs and do all the tune up stuff listed there and follow up the possible problems. And I have had several Handi barrels that needed at least a hundred rounds put thru them before I got good groups.

My .22-250's on the same shelf.  I can't figure out what it likes.  It hasn't had a heck of a lot of rounds through it, so I might just load up a bunch of larger bullets and pour them through to perhaps clean up the bore and then develop a load.  We'll see.

I've tried the tricks and tips.Three different scopes with the last being a Bushnell elite.I've tried factory and reloads from 55,52, 50 , 45 and 40's.Nothing will group tighter then 4 inches at 100 yards.I'm stumped and getting ready to unload this.Kind of disappointing compared to my others

If it's a factory fitted barrel, you always have the option of returning it for repair, it may have a bad barrel or it's not fitted properly, all you have to do is call them and make arrangements, ask them to cover return shipping, they do it all the time when asked.  ;)

Good news I fixed it.I have the forearm looking like it should be off a Howa axiom but it will now group.Four different loads and so far  the best is 36.0 gr. of 4350 with a 55gr. SPSX gives me a 1/2" group at 100yrds. with a Bushnell Elite 3200 3x9.  ;D
