Shot my Single Six last night
« on: March 26, 2010, 06:00:19 AM »
For the first time in many years.  I bought it in Ozark, ALabama back in the late 60's I believe.   :-\  Anyway, I never shot it much, just carried it with snake shot loads in the magnum cylinder.  The only wear it has is the "holster" type!   :D

I just got a 22 cal. bullet trap in my basement range so I thought I'd give the old girl a try.  After replaceing the mag cyl. with the LR one and breaking out a box of PMC 22 LR target loads, I fired a group that landed a little high and a (very) little right of POA.   I didn't measure it, but it was around 2 inches.  This was at 30 feet.

Considering a number of factors, not the least of which is my old eyes, I was very pleased dispite the group size.   ;D

Now that I can shoot a number of my handguns, and rifles, in the comfort of my own home I think the old girl will get a lot more use!   8)

Keep us updated on how well the trap holds up. Where do you get one and how much $ are they? I havent even thought about creating my own indoor range. Heck I could shoot 20 yds or better in my basement. I know you enjoyed plinking indoors.

No problemo!   ;D

But SHOOT!  If I could get 20 yards in my basement I'd be tempted tp put in a clay bird througher!   :D

You ca do a lot with that much space!

Site sponser MidSouth should have traps and Midway has the one I bought on sale for around $55 I think.

First five years or so I had my Single Six I lost count of how many 550 count bulk boxes of Federal ammo I put thru it. It has always been an accurate shooter with the LR cylinder. Not so much so with the mag cylinder. For about the last five years I haven't shot it too much as I spend more time with my 38's, 357 mags, 45 LC's, 454 Casulls and 500 S&W mags. I still break it out when I have my grandkids and let them have fun with a bulk box of 22's.

My son saved his money until he had enough to buy the Heritage Rough Rider in 22rl, so yesterday we went to Academy and picked one up. It was a little late when we got home so he didn't get to shoot it much but toady we'll set up to the targets and he can plink all day.

Old eyes wouldn't come into play as much bro if you had been shooting it all these years.   That's how it is with my Super Bearcat... it shoots where I point it after the 10's of thousands of rounds it's shot in the almost 40 years I've had it.   Most of those years it was stuffed in a back pocket nearly every time I was in the outdoors.    And before it I carried an old model Bearcat.   Give it some time with lots of shooting and it'll get their for you too.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

I have the Bisley verson of the single six, this is a nice gun.  Not as accurate as my semi-auto Buckmark or Ruger Mk. 3, but one of my favorites.  It is so well built that I am curious if anyone has ever worn one out?  They are one of Bill Ruger's early designs.

Between me and my paw in law we haven't come close to wearing mine out and I THINK he said he bought it used in the 70's. I know I have personally shot at least 25 550 bricks through it not counting the years he had it and he shoots more than I do.

With Winchester .22 mag my Single Six shoots smaller and better centered groups than the .22 LR cylinder. With the LR cylinder it about equals my old Dura-Matic.  Maybe I need a different brand of .22 LR. Has any one tried WRF's in their SS? The SS is the gun I tend to grab to investigate things that go bump in the night. Need a center fire!

Back before my grils where born and I still had contact lenses, I got a 7 1/2", six shot group with my single six at 100 yards.  Much more accurate than I am.  Obviously that was from a rest.
That was over 21 years and 3 pickup trucks ago.

Hey!  I didn't know you had a single six!  I thought you just had them thunder boomers and stuff!  My Bro. has one that was my Dad's, and I've offered him a house and a couple cars plus my wife and dog but he won't part with it.  I bought one of them good looking foreign jobs with case coloring, but it looks better than it shoots.

You keep on and I'll have to drive up and visit you afore' long so I can shoot in an indoor range!

I've about finished my outdoor 200 yd. range.  When the heat breaks, I plan to take it out to 400.
