Recoil pad for CZ Mauser
« on: December 02, 2003, 07:07:20 AM »
Does anyone know where I can get a recoil pad for these.  My 8mm kicks like a mule even with cast bullets.  I refinished the gun and it shoots great but I can't stand the 8mm kick.  If a commercial pad is not available perhaps I can fabricate something with the proper material? I am looking for some ideas. :-)  :-)

TF,

I can certainly emphathize with you with your recoil concerns!

Recoil reduction is done by absorbing (pads), reducing (heavier gun/lighter bullets, muzzle brakes), or mechanical devices such as mercury-filled tubes, springs, or shock absorber mechanisms built into the buttstock.

Try the easiest ones first:

1.  Shoot lighter bullets at slower velocity.

2.  Slip-on recoil pad.  A foam rubber crutch cover works well.  It's cheap, and can be found at drug stores.  Duct tape layers of closed-cell foam (packing material) to your buttstock.

3.  On the range, a bean bag or small sand bag between the buttstock and the shoulder makes a BIG difference.

4.  drill holes in the buttstock and forearm channel and fill them with lead shot to make the rifle several pounds heavier.  Epoxy glue for permanent fix.

Back when I was ambitious, I made up a surplus mauser stock that had no less than six pounds of lead shot epoxied into stock cavities.  I fired thousands of surplus 196 grain machine gun ammo in that thing and it never bothered me!

I have some ideas.

I have found the 8 MM Mauser 98 to be a kicker too!  Here are some ideas that have worked for me...I currently use a slipon type made by Pachmayr called the "SLIPON", this allows me to keep my Jugo M-48 Mauser in its original configuration, with the option of slipping on/off the black cushion glove on the stock end.  I shot up some Turk 8 MM this Summer and it really helped to cushion the impact.

I had a brown copy of the same type of stock cover made in China that split after being taken on and off of my Russian Mosin Nagant rifle over the course of several years, so I would stick with quality on an item like that.  Either way, the slipon is quite affordable, and can be used on numerous rifles, that is why I like it.

If you don't mind altering the stock/custom, etc. you could screw install a commercial type of butt pad, mail order, or a good gunshop would have it.  I also had some success using a towel draped on my shoulder that helped to dampen the recoil on all of my bolt actions, but it would slip off and need frequent adjustment.  So I went with the slip on type.  :-)

I saw a link on another forum last night for a company that sell shoe insoles (some gel type stuff) that also makes recoil pads for rifles (the owner must be a shooter   ).  It wasn't a well known brand, at least not to me but looked real interesting to say the least.  When I get home I'll try to find it for you and post the link.  I'm at work now and can't get into the other forum due to filters on the work PC  :(

Edit: You could also try a PAST Recoil Pad, it's worn over the shoulder and works well for some.  I don't like the bulk of it myself but others swear by it.

Here's the link that I promised earlier.  I have no experience with them myself but have heard some rave reviews on other forums.
