Value of used Ruger New Model Blackhawk...
« on: May 20, 2010, 10:59:20 AM »
The local gunshop has a .44 Mag Single Action Ruger in the New Model Blackhawk...
It looks like it's never been fired, they want $460 for it...On the top of the barrel it states it is a Commerentive model for Ruger's 50th year...Is this a good deal???

I have a .357 and I'm thinking about deer hunting with a handgun as I've killed one with just about every thing else...How well can you control the gun with that western grip?? With my .357 the pistol just rolls back in my fist...

Also, it seems they have a more narrow grip now than the one that I have owned for 30 years, can you get a thicker grip for these things...Thanks...

I don't know too much about the price of that pistol but I will give you my experience with grips on a Black Hawk. I have a Black Hawk in 45 Colt. The wood grips were fine while shooting 255 gr bullets around 850 fps but when I stepped up the horse power with a heavy dose of WW 296 and a 250 Hornady XTP it would role back into my hand and hurt the web of my hand and I could not control it. I put a Hogue one piece grip on it and it turned it into a pussy cat. I can hold on to the pistol now and it is a dream to shoot with these heavy loads. The Houge grips run $18.49 at Midway USA. That is a great deal.

thats a flat top new model. The retail is probably even a bit higher but if you know somebody that knows somebody (a freind thats a dealer) Ive seen them sell for less then 400 bucks but by the time you pay shipping your only going to save about 30 bucks anyway. Ive got one and there a nice gun.

$400 is fair if it is in excellent shape.  They run about $550 around here, new.  I like the flat top, and 6 1/2 barrel.  I have big hands, and put a pair of maple grips on mine that are slightly thicker then factory.  It seem to help a little with the recoil.  Mine is very accurate.

Big, I like those grips...I have big hands as well, I'm 6ft 5...Where did you get them from???
It's funny, the first time I held that gun I knew they were smaller than my .357 Blackhawk, it's a 1957 build...

btw...I bought the gun, he took me up on my $400 offer and IT'S NEVER BEEN FIRED...

I'm planning to remedy that little situation...I also picked up a box of Wolf ammo and a box of  Hornady's loaded with the 240 XTPs...I know those bullets work well at killing deer out of an inline so I figured that would be a good place to start...

Good deal Flint, I think you will like that gun.  These days I mostly shoot a 250 grain bullet at about 950 fps - its easy on the hand and ears, but more power is always there if you want it.  Those grips are stabilized maple.  I bought em off a guy on e-bay several years ago.  I don't remember his name though.  The little added thickness feels good in my large hands when I am shooting full power loads.

I had one of these, great gun but the grips were thin and tended to chew up my hands with hotter loads.  I have several of the"old" New Model Blackhawks and really prefer the larger grip frame so traded it off.  Anyway I think CDNN http://www.cdnninvestments.com/dowournewcat.html has them for in their current catalog for $389.

flintlock,

I'm set up to reload the 44.

Save your brass and we'll hook up at some point.

I have plenty of standard H110 loads with the 240gr XTP also, just in case....It's my standard pistol hunting load for the 44 handgun, and my ruger carbine.

I buy XTP's like Mel Gibson bought "Catcher in the Rye" in Conspiracy Theory.  I can't walk out of a gun store without a box in either 44 or 357.

Thanks surveyor, you are the man...I shot this morning and just put on a pair of deer skin gloves, that made a big difference...I'm going down east Friday to do some fishing so I'll have a chance to shoot some more...I can tell I need to practice and get used to this gun, a .357 is a pussy cat compared to this one...
