Project Colt is HERE!!!!!!
« on: October 09, 2010, 09:42:31 AM »
Ha ha.  I've been like a new puppy waiting but now it's in my hands.  Ken did a great job on it!  These aren't the best pics but I wanted to get something up here.  She's got a nice even blue with a 5 1/2" barrel.  He mated the grip frame ears to the main frame and polished the sides of the trigger guard where the factory missed polishing.  I'll get her to the range on Monday and get it sighted in.  I already know the front sight is too high and needs to be brought down a little.  That will re-shape it some also.  All in all, I'm very happy with how it turned out.  I have about $750 total into it and it's just the way I want it and I already know it's a good shooter.  I'm a happy man!  44 Man

Very nice Lewis.  Although I kaven't posted, I have been following the "Project Colt".  I'm glad you went with the 5-1/2" barrel as it preserves the markings and looks good.  The stag grips look great.

I have a number of "project guns" in my head, but too little time and money.

Thanks Guys!  Hillbill, actually it's a .45 colt.  I can't wait to get it to the range now!  (I know, I'm never happy)  My only disapointment is that he put a target crown on it rather than the factory style muzzle.  I may take a file to it and round the outer edge a little.  Maybe not.  44 Man.

You cant see the crown when its pointed downrange anyway.
I say enjoy it as is, or send it to me (Ha).

Gcrank you are right.  And I've been handling it more and it's growing on me.  It just wasn't what I expected on the muzzle.  I'll get her to the range on Wednesday and shoot it!  :)  44 Man

Very Nice and it sounds like Ken enjoy's his trade as he took the time to correct the unrelated (such as the stripped trigger hole) without being ask?
I thought the turn around time was good on the whole considering the attention to detail. Your Colt will be a great advertisment for Ken and Magnaport.

Yes, Ken just fixed what needed fixing as he came to it, he always does it right!  I shot it today and needed to file a little off the front sight to get it into register and it shoots really good!  I guess I don't even mind the muzzle now....  I'll get more trigger time later, at the moment we are packing to head to Texas for the winter.  44 Man

Geez, the last time I was in Luchenbach all that was there was that little post office/general store that sold cold beer so you could sit under the live oaks and listen to folks playing washboards.  I remember the sign: Everybody is somebody in Luchenbach.  Time stood still.  I loved that place.

Keith, that STILL all that is there!  It's quite a surprise for people who are expecting much more.  Willie's is about a mile north of 'downtown' Luchenbach.  It's a nice place.  We enjoy going there with our friends to dance.  44 Man

I had a high pressure job that took me to Austin from time to time.  Luchenbach was one of the things that kept me sane.  It was a great way to uncork, doing nothing more stressful than pitching washers.  I hope to see it again some day.

I pitched washers and had a few Lone Stars there in '78 or'79. One of those years I rode my bike to Texas specifically to have BBQ one weekend. Wished for a long time now that I had accepted the job offer I had then for Big-D, but life is what it is.
I imagine you will be on GBO from there, Lewis? If I get a bug to travel some and have BBQ it would be a good excuse to meet you there! You get to shoot some there too?

That would be fine gcrank.  I'll be on line and yes, we've got two ranges about 15 miles away in opposite directions.  I'm developing friends where I can also wander their property and shoot dirt clods.  Come on down and we'll go have BBQ for sure!  44 Man

Dang, Lew, that Colt came out good!!!!

When you are down to TX, might find out if them ranges near you offer Cowboy Shooting. I think you would enjoy it. Have a great winter down there, going to North Carolina myself.

Greenriver, you enjoy North Carolina!  When we get to Texas, I'll be close enough to Tin Star Ranch.  That have Cowboy shoots there pretty regular and their own replica of the Alamo and 'Gunsmoke's' Dodge City fronts.  With lots of cowboy targets out the backs of the buildings, it's pretty neat.  I'll try to get up there and try it out once.  You take care this winter, I'll see you in the spring and we'll do some shooting and tell some lies. Ha ha.  44 Man.
