Taurus M-991
« on: February 19, 2010, 03:38:25 PM »
I just purchased a new model 991,22 mag, 9 shot. When I got the gus the cylinder had a lot of grit in it and was hard to turn. Every time I pulled the hammer back I could hear, like there was sand in it. Tried to load it and the bullets wouldnt gove half way in.

I cleaned the gun well and washed it with some gun scrubber spray then oiled it. It now functions flawlessly, and groups are about 1.5" - 2" at 35 yards with iron sights off the bench.

I am considering buying a model 94 in 22lr, but after reading all the bad reviews on this sight I am woundering if I shoud?

If they only need a good cleaning thats no problem, I had to do that with the Browning and Rugers as well.

Any thoughts? Also looking at the 44's.

Thanks

I have had good experience with my taurus small frame, excellent accuracy with about 1k lead handloads, maybe that many jacketed too... and though I'm only shooting cans at 25yds (don't know what the group size could have been) it's a .38 so it's a bit more recoil.... sounds to me like yours and mine are both in the same class and I bet those aren't the only two good ones taurus has put out.  it's your money, but if you struck gold last time, why fear to go again?

I picked up a 991 last spring to use for small game hunting and low cost practice. It was filthy like you said and suffered from the dreaded "cylinder lockup" as described in several posts. I cleaned mine the same as you and dressed up the forcing cone to give a little more clearance.(I think the quality control at the factory leaves something to be desired). After adding a 1x scope I was able to get quarter sized groups off a rest at 25 yards. I have not had a chance to shoot any of the other Tracker models so won't comment on them. All in all the 991 is as accurate as a S&W 617 I sold years ago to finance a Sporting Clays addiction I suffered from at the time. Best of luck with whatever decision you make.

Thanks -
I'm very happy with it, enough to buy a used model 44 today at the gun and knife show. It was slightly used, but the trigger is smooth and crisp and shoots great. $450 isn't bad in my book

If luck deals me a bad one, at these prices I won't complain much. It's better than spending $800+ and still stand a chance of getting a bad one. I don't buy them for resale value, I buy them to use and use alot.

clays390,
Could you elaborate on your comment "dressed up the forcing cone to give a little more clearance."
I also have this gun.
I am looking at a Weigand no drill scope mount.  Heard anything about it?

Taurus Tracker .17 and .22 Scope Mount

Fits .17, .22 Caliber Taurus Tracker Revolver

Sorry, this mount will not fit the TRACKER Model 17C

Taurus Tracker .17 and .22 Scope Mount Weaver style

Now a rock solid mount that does not depend on the Trackers vent rib for security. We have designed
the ultimate no drill and tap mount for the Tracker .17 and .22 revolvers. This mount requires removing
the rear sight and uses the rear sight notch as a recoil lug. Extra large recoil lug prevents scope mount
movement .  Accepts most Weaver style rings and accessories.
4-1/2" long, available in Silver and Black anodized finish, weighs 1.3 ounces.
