Best 150-225yds Contender
« Reply #1 on: November 18, 2003, 02:27:08 PM »
If you reload, 309JDJ... hands down.  The most you can get out of the Contender safely and the best bullet selection.  If you don't handload.  30-40Krag.  Midway carries the Virgin Valley Contender barrel in the carbine and pistol lengths.  Excellent ballistics.  If you're on a budget...  Well, find a good used barrel at Ed's Contenders is something like 7-30Waters or 30-30Win.  These are really only 150yds max cartridges due to the factory round nose bullet.

Even if you don't reload, JD Jones (SSK Industries and a sponsor here) sells loaded ammunition for all of his calibers.  I used the 358JDJ and his loaded ammo for a couple seasons... accounting for 1 doe and 2 bucks.

I just re-read your message and realized I have more info to provide.

309JDJ, 24" bull barrel, Leupold 2x7 Compact scope, 150gr Hornady Interbond.  The best all around light weight reach out and touch'em rig.

While I don't have a 309JDJ, I do have a Dave VanHorn 30-40 Krag barrel in a 24" tube and handload for it.  This is another good choice as factory ammo is available and the 30 caliber holds a great selection of bullets.

I also have a 270JDJ that I use the new Barnes Triple Shock "X" bullet with.  24" fluted bull barrel with a matte finish topped with a Nikon 4x12 Monarch scope.  Excellent velocity with the 130gr bullet, even better accuracy.  I'm really pleased with the new bullet from Barnes.

Can you explain the "safely"?   Still have 5 of the 9 SSK JDJ barrels I've owned (includes three 309's).   My 338#2 and both 375's are not safe?   I've known JD for something like 2 1/2 decades and he considers them safe, so I'm interested to hear your reasons - why you're saying the JDJ's bigger than the 309 are unsafe.

Thanks.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Well, out to that range, you can load up dozens of rounds that will do the job for you. With handloads, deer are just as dead from the 7x30 as from anything else at 200 yards. As far as the 30-40, do your research. The camp is divided on that one. Might be safe, but it is pushing the limits as far as pressure. Don't put hot loads in that one! The wildcats are good rounds and I've owned one or 2 myself, but look at your ballistics realistically before you make a decision. Is it worth all of the extra cost associated with a wildcat when you can still kill a deer at the same range with something less exotic? Look at the real trajectory of these things at the ranges you are talking about. Can the wildcats gain you more than an inch or 2 at 200 yards? Especially if you are handloading? Just some things to consider. My vote would be either a 7x30 or 3030AI just due to the cost vs. what your requirements are. Keep in mind, we're talking deer here. If you go to bigger game, that changes the answer.
