20-06 ready to go
« on: March 09, 2010, 03:27:02 PM »
Finally finished the 20-06 enough to put a few rounds down the barrel.  Steyr M95, 24 inch Remington 204 Ruger barrel, 58gr of A8700 CCI LR Mag primer and 34gr Midway Varmint gernade bullet.  Anyone with one of the velockity calculator programs?  This is a 25-06 case necked down to 20, same sholder taper and position.  Case holds 62gr of water.  Larry

Looks great Larry,  I have been following your project of this strait pull rifle conversion I was just curious as to why you went with the 25-06 case instead of the 30-30 that you had planned to use prior.
I have no experience with the Steyr 95 action, what caliber was that rifle originally chambered for ?
The rifle looks slim & trim and not bulky, should be a one of a kind,  Nice Job !        Jedman

Larry, a couple of questiona. Why go with such a lite bullet? What twist did you use? I`m considering a large cased 20 cal. also, but if I build one it will be built for the 50 gr. Bergers. Have you cronoed it yet? How does it do?

I went with th 06 case because I could not get the 30-30 length and diameter to feed from the strange metal clip thing this rifle uses to hold the rounds in the magazine.  The 06 case feeds fine.  It is also much easier to form brass, one pass from 25 to 20 and it is done.  For some reason the nickel brass forms much much easier than regular brass does.  The reamer was also easy, I used a 270 reamer I had and just gound the sholder further down at the same angle, worked perfect first try.  The barrel is a stock Remington takeoff, I am thinking it is a 1 in 11 twist?  I measured it when I started but I don't remember now.  This would be great for the real heavy bullets, I would say use the 06 case, but I guess you could also neck down a243 case just as easily as I did this one.  At least with the 06 case you would never need more case capacity.  I may shoot it today or tomorrow, I loaded up 7 rounds, 6 with 57gr and one with 60gr.  I will try to crony it when I get it on paper and if the bullets hold together.  Larry

Just an update, I put 6 rounds through it today and nothing bad happened.  The brass and primers look good and extraction was easy, so I think things are good.  I will shoot a target next time and get it across a chrono.  Life is good.  Larry

Dumb question:  Why use a .270 reamer?  Wouldn't a .25-06 reamer work without the shoulder modification?

Im surprised the bullets held together.  They must be constructed a little stouter than I thought.

Anxious to see what you get for groups and velocity.

With 60gr of H1000 and the 36gr DT bullets it made 4,096 fps.  The primers looked good so a little faster powder is probably needed because the case will only hold 61gr of H1000.  I did fire some of those but could not get the chrony to read.  It did 5 shots under an inch, so I think it is fairly good.  I am going to try some lighter bullets and see how it does.  Larry

I guess I don't understand.    4096fps witha 36grbullet?   A 204 ruger will do that with no problem.   I realize also you are still working on loads.   Wouldn't this round be very hard on barrels?
I realize it is fun to do something diff.  What is your Goal with this round?
Just trying to wrap My head around all this I guess.

Lets see now................A 20-06, guess the goal would be to go fast?  This is a science experment, a test, if you knew what what would happen it would not be a test would it?  With any good test you need to start at some place that you fee will not lead to total disaster, so starting with H1000 was a safe bet in my estimation, which seems to have turned out OK because the rilfe is still in one piece and I have all my fingers.  Next step it to move up the powder burn rate chart some, then see how that looks, then move up more etc etc.  This is how it is safely done, people who do it all in one giant step usually make the 11:00 O'Clock news.  Plus, no one at the range has anything remotely like it.  Larry

This neat Larry.  Good Job, and way to play it safe.  Us gun nuts don't need to be making the 11 O'Clock news.  Do you want me to send you a PM for the barrel info?

Watching Intently,

P.O. Ackeley made a wildcat .22 w/ an -06 case and if I remember correctly. He didn't make the vel's. he wanted because of the too large case I think he called it overbore. They sure look fast though.  ;D
