Oversized lead bullets??
« on: May 18, 2010, 09:41:03 AM »
I was going through some of my .22 caliber ammo the other day and found a brick of remington sub-sonic bullets. I have probably had these for 15 years  and they were stored in an ammo can all this time. My problem is most of them the won't chamber in my sportster or any of my other .22's that I have. I feel a rough surface on the lead bullet portion of each round like there is corrosion or oxidation going on. I was thinking of using some oil soaked fine sand paper and lightly sand the lead till it will chamber in the rifle? I'm going to sort thru the whole brick, but the ones that I can load, shoot great. Another thing is I haven't had any misfires with this ammo either.

Having been stored in an ammo can there should be no problem with them firing.  I am surprised the lead picked up that much corrosion.  I'll bet it's the ones closest to the outer sides that are corroded.  The inner ones arn't corroded.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Dip the nose in some kerosene or mineral spirits (probably even bore cleaner) and give them a little finger spin in some 4-O steel wool. Wipe them off and let dry. They should fit up.
A little lube would be good before firing. If you have some 'left over' plastic 22 boxes with the hole piece that comes off load all 50 holes and mass dip the bullets only in some olive, peanut, or canola oil and set them over a paper towel to drip off, then box up.
