I took the T/C encore plunge. Now what barrel ??

I would like a 35 cal but i know that rimmed cases work better. What about a 356 or 35-30. any suggestions. I would like plenty of advice. Where to get it? I want a 20in bull to make a cool little carbine. Main quarry will be deer(whitetail) Nilgai, axis deer and hogs.. love the site!!!!!!!!!!!

It is my belief (or should I say Bias) that the .350 Rem Mag is the most superior .35 caliber cartridge. It is a great brush cartridge for deer and bear. Mine shoots .5in groups all day long!!!

I have a .350 Rem Mag barrel for my Encore and have had no problems with extraction. There are several calibers you could choose that use a rimmed case and give better than 35-30 ballistics. You could have a .356 Win barrel. You could do a 35-444, 35 Whelen etc. But I like my .350. Just don't order one from Fox Ridge. They cut the throat way to long on mine. I have managed to find a very accurate load but the OAL is .340" longer than SAAMI spec and factory loads don't shoot for s%^t out of it. Sean

358 winchester isn't rimmed, but you won't be sorry either!!

.358 Winchester or 35/284 if you want to play with a wildcat that has 35 Whelen/350Mag power levels and is easy to form. You don't need to use a rimmed case in a Contender or Encore, and there is no signifigant difference in how well they work in the action. 35/284, 35 Whelen, 350 Rem Mag all do the same thing power wise, unless you want to argue over 50fps. Take into account that recoil will be very stout with any of those rounds in a light carbine when loaded to potential, the .358 is no pussycat either.

If you want a rimmed round, get a 356 winchester or 358 Bellm or a 358JDJ, 444 marlin cases necked down, proven rounds in the contender.

I still think in the encore the 358 Winchester is a winner

When I got my .350 Rem Mag I was told that you could approach .358 Norma (which is another alternative BTW) depending on the OAL that you had to stick to. Sean

Being realistic the 35 Whelen, 350 Rem Mag, and the .35/284 will all do the same thing. I doubt you could prove a meaningful accuracy or velocity difference in well chambered barrels. To me there are 2 reasons to use a wildcat 1) To get better performance than is factory available, 2) Just because you want a wildcat. Both reasons are good ones, but if you are not a very experienced reloader, and willing to fork over the extra $$$ for dies, then stick with one of the 2 factory offerings.

I have had the Encore rifle in both the .358 Win and the .350 Rem Mag. and after what you described I would recommend the .358 Win.
If you wont a light 20" carbine then this cartridge will be much more pleasent than the larger cases of the .350/.35 Whelen. You will not see much field difference with the smaller case. (They all have recoil with bullets over 200 grains.) If you need the more powerful rounds then I would probably put them in a heavier 22" barrel. --- You are real close to the muzzle with these single shots and the Magnum lets you know it.
