Holster or Sling

Guys,

     I am useing a Striker in .308 to hunt deer, and wondering if anyone could suggest some type of holster or the best sling to use with this gun? Thanks for any help you can offer.

I tried a shoulder holster for my 10" TC Contender but have switched over to a sling.  Much more comfortable.

Have you considered a wheelbarrow or one of the two wheel deer carts?  :-D

I use a soft case made by Allen Co. From my conversations with JD Jones of SSK fame so does he. Sure beats holsters or slings in my opinion for the big heavy specialty handguns.

 I have tried both for my 14" contender & I like the sling better.It lets me bring the gun up 7 on target quicker. I found a camera strap that is slightly curved it seems to help keep the gun close & is a lot more comfortable tha a rifle sling :lol:

I used both this weekend.  Carried the gun on the four wheeler and into the stand with a holster but also had a 1" web sling on the gun to use while in the stand and for support when shooting.  My current holster is an Uncle Mikes shoulder holster that I got in a trade, I just took all the plastic off the two inch webbing and put the ends together with a buckle and now have a bandolier holster.

I have used just the sling for the past 5 years or so but tried this Saturday to keep the gun from getting banged up getting to and from the woods.  Thought it worked well.

I carry my 14" 7x30 and 44mag in a shoulder holster  and incorperate a belt to help carry the wait.

I tried it on my rifle and liked it so much, I am going to get a few more.  I can carry my Ultra-Mag comfortably with it, or a scoped super 14.  But what is a real treat is using the sling with my 10" 7 TCU w/ rifle sights.  Hardly even notice it is there.

I have a 7.5" SRH with a red dot sight on it for deer hunting.  I don't have a holster or sling for it at this time.  I just lug it all day.  Not a big deal except when I want to use the binoculars, take a leak, or get into some rugged going.  

I've never used a sling on a handgun before.  Do you set the sling length long enough so you can bring it up to firing position without unslinging?  I would think some sort of cross draw arrangement that includes an over the shoulder strap, or a bandoleer would work best.  I'm not stuck on the cordura ones.  They seem to be bulky, ugly, and noisy.

Someone posted along time ago on this subject, and recommended a leather holster maker that makes a great gun specific cross draw holster, but I've lost the link.

I'd be interested in hearing comments and suggestions regarding a sling or holster for this specific combo.

I stole the idea from Graybeard several years ago! I also carry my 14" Contender in a case, slung around my neck with a strap. Once in the stand I tie the case in front of me and half unzip it so the gun is near and ready. While walking I sling the empty case on my back and carry the contender in my hand.

I loved the idea of a sling before I actually owned a T/C but after installing it, I was banging the heck out of the gun and scope while climbing into or with a tree stand. The case was the solution.

I just got a redhawk 7.5 with scope and bought an Uncle Mikes Bandolier Holster from www.cheaperthandirt.com. It was cheaper there than anyone else. I have not carried it enough to know how well I will like this set up. I think it will be ok but if not, I will use the holster for carrying and climbing and keep the Redhawk in my hand while walking and hunting.

Hi FTW,

I took a look at the site you listed.  They do have leather holsters for scoped pistols, but they are not the ones I remember looking at in the past.  The ones I looked at were much more form fitting and nicer in appearance.

GB, I thought you might have been the one who listed a custom holster maker out west somewhere who made some very nice leather holsters for scoped handguns.  Somehow I lost the link.

You climb up the stand with the gun?

I always unload the gun and use a rope to pull the gun and other equipment up to me.

Always! I prefer to have control of the unloaded weapon at all times. Less chance to bury the barrel in mud or bust the scope. That is why the cased idea works so well.
I would never climb with a loaded weapon.

LarryL, if it was me that suggested it then most likely it was Pistol Packaging at www.pistolpackaging.com. That's what I use for my RBs as they are just too darn big and heavy to carry in a hip holster.

For TCs and other heavy guns I believe the best arrangement is a soft case. I can carry it in my left hand with the wide end of case unzipped and a shell in the chamber of a TC and have it in action almost as fast as if carried in my hand. And with much less motion and more speed than any holster I've ever seen. I don't even like to carry a rifle on a sling so for me at least that is not even an option. I thought I was the only one using the soft case as I'd been recommending it for years and most folks hadn't thought of it. But one day JD Jones and I were having a long phone conversation and some how the topic came up and he admitted that he has been using the soft case just as I have for many years. With the soft case you can tie a rope to it and pull it up with you after you are in the stand or if you are one who has to keep it with you then tie a rope or sling to the soft case and sling it over your shoulder as you climb. I don't like to do that personally.

I've climbed with heavy scoped guns in holsters and have had them come out on me while climbing. Straps and snaps and all that are nice but don't always do the job. A zipped soft case has never dropped a handgun on me yet.

I got the idea from GB and use a soft case and a wide strap, kinda like a purse :eek: ...not that there is anything wrong with that.  

This is very easy to handle and protects the gun great.  

No matter how you assend a tree stand it is easy with this rig.

Currently use it for  686, SRH and 15 inch encore.

I have purched two of my soft case on a "close out" table for $5.00 each.
