A new to me 22/250
« on: June 26, 2010, 01:53:28 PM »
I have been looking for a Savage model 12VF in 22/250rem.  Just a plain bologna and white bread, no frills rifle in 22/250 to shoot PD with.  I found one NIB on Gun Broker for $450 buy now price but didn't want to rush into it and someone else didn't dwaddle the like I did.  I decided that was my limit for a varmint rifle so I have been looking on-line and haven't found one I am interested in.  I have sworn off of gun shows because of their door charge getting continually higher and never having anything interesting, yada, yada, yada, but their was one in town this weekend and I thought to myself  "well you never know".   I found a table vendor that had the stainless/laminate/fluted versions of the Sav model 12 with the higher price tags hanging from them but no plain jane black on black cheapies.  Then I saw it!  An older custom built  commercial FN Mauser action, heavy barreled 22/250 with a H. Schoulz barrel and a Canjar trigger set to about 1# all mounted in a fine walnut monte carlo stock and had been converted to a single shot.  It was wearing a cheap Tasco scope mounted in a Leupold single piece mount and rings, but the guy said it had a Unertl on it when he got it.  The rifle showed some handling marks but was in very good condition and the bore was shiney as a new dime.  He said he wanted $550 it and I offered him $425 without scope or rings and he countered $450 so I finished looking at the rest of the stuff in the place but went back and offered the $450 out-the-door and bought it.  The only thing about the rifle that sort of disappoints me is the rate of twist of 1/14" that I couldn't measure until I brought it home.  I was thinking of shooting some heavier for caliber bullets in it but will make due with the 50 grainers.  Thanks for listening so me run on.

i have a 22-250 h&r so far i have tryed the winchester jhp 45 gr /50 gr sbst silver tip/and federal gamekings bthp in55 gr
the 45 and the55 fly good. the50 gr silver tips were 3.5 in high at 80 yrds and with a 4 inch group  the action popped open every time. but with the 1 in14 twist both hollow points were right on there mark in 45/55 gr with a 2.5 in group im sure a good rest would tighten up the groups. good luck and happy shooting.
