22 Ammo
« on: January 13, 2011, 03:32:12 AM »
In the days of my youth most kids started off with a single shot 22 rifle. Some were marked “short, long or long rifle”. Back then we figured that if the gun was marked as simply “long rifle” then it would handle the two smaller rounds.
I now have a S&W Model 17 revolver that is stamped “22 Long Rifle”. I have asked and received various opinions of whether or not the shorts or subsonic ammo could be used in this hand gun.
Can anyone here clear up this issue?

Any revolver marked "22 long rifle" will safely shoot longs, shorts, cb caps, etc.  In a semi-auto or bolt so marked you may have feeding difficulties, but it would also be safe.  Its when you try to shoot long rifles in a gun chambered for shorts, or 22 magnums that you have problems.  Sort of like shooting 38 specials in a longer 357 magnum chamber.  I use CB Caps in my model 17 all the time when its to cold out, and I feel like practicing in my "garage range".  Just run a brush thru the chambers when you are done so a fouling ring from the shorter shell doesn't make chambering long rifles more difficult.

Thanks Larry. I don't have a garage range but I do have some CBs and a bunch of annoying squirrels running around on my roof. I shall now proceed to diminish the number of both the afore mentioned objects!

I have shot a variety of .22 rim fire types in my Ruger Single six Bisley over the last 10 years and have found that some of the short range low noise versions are not as accurate as the full power LR.  I did get Aguilla Super Cobra pest rounds to shoot somewhat well, at least enough to hit medium size varmints out to 50 feet.  I had to stop using them as they were quite loud, despite only having "Primer loaded" propellant in them.  Thank God for pellet rifles. ;D

Yeah. Horah for pellet guns. I have a friend who lives in town and one of his neighbors loves to call the cops. You know, one of those busy body snitch types. Despite the distraction he was able to nail 46 squirrels in 2010. Just for fun he marked his calendar each time he scored.
