Savage Model 99 300 Savage
« on: June 02, 2010, 12:11:00 PM »
I have a beautiful Savage 99 in 300 Savage I would rate 98% plus that I may sell. Serial number indicates 1949 manufacture and has a Redfield tang mounted peep sight that is period correct. It belonged to a police officer and he stated it was shot less than twenty times. It came with 5 boxes of period correct Winchester 180gr. ammo. I collect Rugers and have no idea of the value. Wood is near flawless with nice grain, bluing is 99%+, case coloring on lever is 98%+, and bore is bright and shiny. The only "flaw" is the owner engraved his name on the underside of the lever in the event it was stolen with an electric engraver. I am sure it could be sanded off and bluing applied as it is not that deep.

Any idea of value?

I would go to the "Savage Collectors" section on 24hourcampfire.com and post this question there. The name engraved on the lever is likely going to kill the collectors interest since they are not blued but color case hardened. Good luck and by the way they are great hunting guns.

Sorry to say, but that with the name engraved in the receiver, it now has zero interest for collectors.  It is simply a nice shooter.  So, what is a Savage 99 shooter in vg shooting condition worth?  Somewhere between $400 and $600, if you can find someone who can live with that engraving.

The essence of collecting is that you have a beautiful original specimen that has not been altered or cosmetically marred.

Cafsman:

You stated that the engraving was underside of the LEVER.  This component is easily replaced by a licensed Smith.  I suggest calling around to find a local smith that will locate this part and replace it for you.  A TOP condition Savage 99 in 300 typically sells for approx $650.  Sold "as is" you can expect approx $400. - $475.

Good luck to you.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that Redfield tang peep worth about 200.00 these days, if it's in the same condition as the gun?
I haven't looked at one for a long time but I saw them go for 130.00 for rusty ones 15yrs ago.
Cabela's sells beaters for 600.00 that I wouldn't bother with for any price. But thats Cabela's.
Very good idea to replace the lever!

I took home this one this weekend, for a LOT less.

It's a 1953 Model 99-EG in .300 Savage, and it's a good 99% - with NO names,  initials or SSN's.

It stands me just under $400 - which IMHO is a bargain.

I agree! Thats a good deal with the Williams peep on it. I stumbled on the same gun in a cheesy little gun shop in Arizona about 17yrs ago. It was in like new condition. Made in 1955. It had a scope on it and the guy wanted 500.00 for it. While haggling over it he said the scope was worth 200.00,(which it wasn't). I told him he could keep the scope and I would give him 300.00 for the gun. He went for it. Then I found a Redfield top of the line peep at a gunsmith shop not long after. My jaw hit the floor when he said 35.00. Very lucky for me on all accounts I think. It was a solid killer at 300yds and very accurate with 40grs of IMR-4895 under a Win. 150gr Power Point bullet.
The one I have now is the same gun only not in as good a shape but all original. It has a color case hardened steel follower/counter instead of brass. No peep. I paid 300.00 for it about 7 or 8yrs ago. It came with 11 boxes of 50s/60s ammo in 150 and 180gr Win. and Rem. which I paid 6.00 a box for. They are great guns, I love em. Pretty fond of the .300 Sav. too.
Best of luck with your new 99!!

I also acquired a M99 in .300 Savage recently for $500.  It is in very good shape, wood and bluing, and has a Lyman peep sight mounted to the rear side of the receiver.  Its S/N is 575540.  As far as I have been able to determine, the "B" code in the circle on the lever boss indicates 1950 mfgr.  However, this B is preceeded by the number 23 which is also in the circle.  Does anyone know what this 23 code means?

Second question:  Have read references to M99 models such as E, EC, F, G, etc., but am wondering if these letters are appended to the M99 designation that is stamped on the receiver??

Thanks in advance for any assistance.
