Still Worth It?
« on: May 22, 2010, 01:44:39 AM »
I know this topic has been kicked around all over the place, but I would be interested in some more recent opinion or experience.  For someone who is not about to spend the $$$$ on a 308 Marlin Express, is the 30-30 AI still a worthwhile conversion?

I think it's sort of like comparing the 308 to the 30-06 - Yea, there is some difference, but not enough to make a real practical difference in the field.  Using those new pointy bullets designed for safe use in a tube magazine does add a little extra long range kick to the old 30-30.

Personal opinion is a good thing, and everyone is entitled to one.  The hard part is separating informed opinion from someone who is just blowing hot air....

Subjective question.  BLUF: if you want to do it and have the scratch, have fun.  In a  lever gun I don't see the point.  With the Hornady LeverEvolution rounds you are in the AI lane for the cost of factory ammo and you can fill the magazine tube.  If you are going to play with one of the single shot rifles chambered for 30-30, it might be worth it as something you are interested in as a project or toy.

Note: I believe the LE bullets are available for reloading now and if used in an AI application, you can fill your magazine.  Have fun.
