Contender / Encore Hammer Extension II
« on: June 01, 2010, 03:23:14 PM »
Guys, I did not want to hijack the original thread so I created this one. The question I have is this: I noticed on the other post that several folks had problems with missfires while using a hammer extension. Did you guys notice if the primer had a mark on it from the firing pin?

I've had this problem as well but have not been able to make it back to the range since removing the extension to see if this was the problem. I did notice that the ones that missfired did have a punch mark on the primer that looked like it should have fired. In other words, I don't know if my primers just suck or if it is from having the hammer extension.

Thanks in advance.

I installed an ext. on my G2 it worked great for a short while then started doing what you described-light primer strikes(mis-fires)  I didn't take mine off as a few said was the only way to solve the"problem". Instead I  disassembled the entire action-cleaned and lubed what needed it and installed a small washer/spacer between the hammer spring and the frame (was installed on the hammer strut) . I reassembled the frame installed my 6.5JDJ barrel shot it---viola-concern corrected,I haven't looked back.

Now,I'm not a "gunsmith" nor would ever claim to be but this "correction" was done easily and the gun now works as it should....(I also hated the fact of walking around with bullets in my pocket that had dented primers)

When I had an extension on my encore it would dent the primer pretty well and sometimes even fire it, but just not enough to set it off most of the time. Soon as I removed it the problem went away and I have had 0 misfires since. If I were betting I would lay money that yours will also.
I don't know if I could trust any fix to the problem. It would always be in the back of my mind that it could happen again and while its just annoying at the range, out deer hunting it could be costly. I have just learned to live without one, get high scope rings.        Dan

I have a hammer extention for my contender that I got from midway usa, it only extends to one side & is made from alluminum.

its very light & I have had no problems with it yet.
