I was looking at the legacy varmint the other day it seems to be a copy of the Rem VLS and VLS thumb hole. they look nice and are quite a bit less expensive than 700's anybody have any firsthand experience with them?

They are NOT a copy of any Rem firearm. That said if you can get past the fact that they are made in Japan (some can't), then it will likely serve you well for many years. They are no 'johnny-come-lately' brand, they have been imported into this county as Howa1500/Smith-Wesson1500/Weatherby Vanguard/and some Mossberg bolt actions for the last 30+ years. They are strong, reliable, safe, and usually very accurate rifles. The least desirable stocks are the plastic injection molded jobs. The laminate (if you can find one, I've been told they actually do exist!), wood, and Houge Overmolded stocks are decent. They are some aftermarket stocks available. Timney Triggers offers a drop-in replacement for the crappy trigger. The trigger is adjustable but most people just can the factory T.G. and drop in a Timney. Please advoid the Jard T.G. as it does not work well. Scope bases are the same as Rem 700 bases (about the only similarity).  I own two and I am in the process of making two semi-custom rifles.

I agree with JimG, the plastic stocks aren't very good. I put Boyd's laminate stocks on mine. I have not had any trouble adjusting the trigger on mine but I may not be as particular as some or maybe I just got lucky. All in all I think they are a very good rifle for the money.
