Did I used the wrong wood
« on: May 31, 2010, 02:01:45 PM »
Making the sled for may BB mortar, Got a great deal on 2 in. hickory planks. 2 in. thick X 10 in. air dried for 15 years, I cut and planed out 4 pieces 1 3/4 thick  by 10 in. by 30 in. long, Glued 2 pieces together for each side that is now 3 1/2 thick, Them 4 pieces is about all you want to lift, On the inside is 4  pieces of white pine, planks that will float,, pine to make it so I can lift it. Bolted together with 5 , 1/2 in. ready bolts. Thinking now after reading a different thread here, is the hickory okey, Thanks- Joe

Oh yeah, hickory will work. Hickory is used in tool handles specifically because of it's ability to withstand shock and impact. If it's air dried x 15 yrs and hasn't checked and split, it probably won't now. Hickory is also memtioned in Round Shot and Rammersas a used wood. The idea of using a floating core is a great idea to keep weight down, I just finished a base for my 24lb coehorn and know what you mean about all you care to lift.  Regards, LS
