Mine's actually expiring in about that time, and sadly, I think I'm going to let it lapse this time around.  Just hasn't been much on the surplus market honestly.  Seems that a few years back things were GREAT (first year I got my license was 2003).   Nowadays - most surplus seems to be police department surplus which is too new to qualify.

In the last 3 years the only gun I ended up using my C&R for was a CZ-82.  Given that I have a local dealer that does transfers for $15 (which I've used several times for non-C&R stuff), I didn't even break even this time around.  Shame.   Maybe we'll see some new things in the future that will be worthwhile.  I know Britain is looking at replacing their old Browning HP's soon, but something tells me they'll melt them before selling them off :(.

No.  In SC I think I had to sent a letter to the county Sheriff (I think just local Chief LEO is required, so if you were in a city I think you have to send to the police chief).  Never heard back from that office (heck I even work for the county, so I know a lot of the people the sheriff's office, even though I"m not working in that specific area) on it at all.  A response wasn't required though.  Just had to send the letter.

Other than that it was pretty painless.

I will never give up my C&RFFL03 license because we still get discounts on ammo, reloading supplies and gun parts with it inbetween buying other c&r guns.  I gave it up the first time and i'll never do it again.  There's always something new that will come along sooner or later.  Plus i can buy on the auction sites too and on the net.

In the last town i lived in i was the only one with a C&RFFL03 license the Police chief told my wife that.

One of my local dealers made fun of me about looking and wanting to order a surplus military gun.  All the store clerks( or should i say jerks) laughed and made jokes about me as i left.  I got my C&R so i could make them starve by cutting out the middleman (them) and they will never make a dime from me ever.  They surely lost a lot of $$$$ from me plus all my new firearm business too. I haven't been in that shop ever since its been many years now.

When you can buy a barrelled mauser action for $100, a composite stock for $50 and a barrel from about $75 up, how can you go wrong?  About any caliber you want to make on your own for $250-300.   Sporterize military gun for $150 plus the gun.  And Yes!!!   Discounts at wholesalers and suppliers.  If you do much shooting, you can't go wrong.

It's a route I've went twice now.  Though I'm satisfied with the results I got, I'd never make the mistake of believing sporterizing a military gun to be low cost route to a hunting rifle :D.

$100 gun
$50 stock (if you skimp - personally I prefer wood so we're talking closer to $100 for a decent wood stock - I went $250 on a Myrtle stock for my .257 Roberts)
$75 barrel
$75 barrel installation
$35 bolt bending
$40 scope drill
$20 scope safety
$100 reblue

Now we're talking ~$500 - and unless you spring a bit more for some action work or stick with something with the same parent case as the original, it probably won't cycle quite as smoothly as an off the shelf rifle.

Sporterizing is fun, but don't go into it thinking you're saving money.  If you want to save money on a hunting gun, buy a basic Savage, Marlin, or Mossberg.  Or check out the used racks for a sporting rifle.  You can darned near always find a nice bolt action .30-06 sporter for $300 or under if you look around and bargain a bit.

Well....not so for me!
I sent my C&R renewal in on March 25. My current license EXPIRED June 1 !  ATF  had cashed my check in April.
I just got off the phone with the ATF Licensing Center.  They said that they are waiting for my background check to clear! ?Huh?
It looks like I got caught up in the huge backlog caused by the Census checks and possibly other bureaucratic obfuscation.....

NRA Joe, it looks like you got in just under the wire!

How old does a gun have to be to be C&R?  Is it different for rifles and pistols?

Wow, I thought it was much older.  So any gun manufactured before 1960 even if still made today would be a C&R.  I'm assuming if I had the liscense, I could buy any 50 year old gun without further paperwork.
