with only a handgun...nothing yet...GOOCHER!
« on: November 21, 2003, 02:27:34 PM »
i found a dilly of a spot this year; a funnel area over a large swamp.   i am planning to insert tommorrow at 5:15  and go about 30 feet up.  i decided to use the blackhawk hunter and some homemade cast bullets.   the spot looks good so i am very hopeful.  if i succeed i will post pictures.  good luck to all of you who might also be headed out tommorrow.

If you don't get a deer this season may I recommend an offseason exotic of hog hunt here in TEXAS.  Great fun, Geat meat, and a lot of opportunity year round anytime you want.  I'm happy to help you in anyway in regards to info or options although my ranch hunts I go on are usually bow only.  There's good cheap hog opportunities for the pistolero.

it is the last day of season that i will be able to use the pistol; after that it is time for the smoke pole.   i cant say i didnt try.   i did see one deer yesterday that i could have killed, but i couldnt see the head, it kept it hidden.  every bit of expereince i have told me it was a buck, i know it was.   30 yards standing still as stone, all i could see was its back half.  i really thought hard about shooting out his femoral,  but if it was small then i just wasted half my meat for a small buck.  i decided to wait and see what happened.  i gave  a few soft doe bleats and got no response whatsoever.  i moved back and forth to try to get a look at it's head to no avail.  then it decided it was time to be somewhere else and ran off; keeping its head well hide.   no doubt a buck of expereince.  but i can not tell you whether he was big or not.  after the season i have had, i am happy to have seen an animal.   i look at it as paying dues....
mk454... a friend and i are trying to plan a hog hunt to somewhere for the year of 2005, preferabley in january or february.   i figured as much as i read on here that guys say texas is heavy with hogs; it is my first choice.  besides, texas sounds nice and warm; just what i need to break up a fridgid winter.  we both would like to take more than one animal (at least be legally able to) and maybe a javalina too.    that would make me really happy.   besides, once i cross that state line something inside me feels right; i was orginally from texas (bridge city, i hear it is really an ugly place now).   anyhow, which part of the state would you suggest i concentrate on?   and thanks for the offer, local advise (unbias) is priceless.

may i suggest deer hunting out west?
alot of states offer left over deer tags, mostly does, for $50 to $75.
we hunt open country uplands and see gobs of deer daily. in fact i have
never gone hunting and not saw something.
we hunt with open sighted revolvers and generally fill 3 to 5 tags a year with mule deer, whitetail, and antelope. the plains and uplands are a great hunting opportunity. spot and stalk is mostly what we do.
my 14 yr old daughter filled her youth tag with a nice mule deer buck. she took it with a ruger 45 colt at 50 yd. need to get her to write a story about it. it was one of the most memorable hunts i have ever been on.

those who know me know one of the biggest impediments to my hunting now is my two small boys (2 1/2 years and 5 months); mom needs help.  i have been fortunate to have what time i've had to hunt so far.  i realize that this is just the way it is.  in time i hope to have two outstanding hunting buddies.   but because of my situation, i dont have alot of freedom to do things i want to do.   in time this will change... my oldest already ventured out with me this last fall for a short excursion scouting.  he is a natural and was angry when i forced him to turn for the truck.  and just over 2.       god help all you with daughters out there!

There are some nice places out in the eastern part of the state known as the pineywoods that have some great hog action.  However, if you want the big nasty boars I'd get a map and then check the i-net for ranches around the sabinal area.  You could also have a great time further south if javelina is acceptable.  I'll get some contact nos. on here for some decent spots when my med-board exams are done in a week or two.

it can happen.  the wi dnr has got it good and screwed up.  deer have become noctural in my area and the ones that havent got shot off.  i have never seen it this bad in my life.  and i hunt harder than i ever have.  up until 3 years ago it was just getting better and better.   then (my theory is) the insurance companies paid someone in the state government to thin them down drastically.  the head of the dnr is appointed by politicains so is therefore open to things that arent good for the resources.   long story short, for what ever reason, things dont look good here now and i dont expect it to improve for a few years to come.    if it were not for my job, i would have left this liberal $%*^hole quite a while ago.   things being as they are, i have to ride it out and even try to change things; but that takes time.   hopefully by the time my kid can hunt things will be headed in a different direction.

Myron, are you in or near one of the areas where the WI DNR "thinned" the herd because of CWD?

yeah: in the state.   they have systematically jammed up the management here for a while to come.  i know something had to be done but they went way overboard when you look at the entire state.

Yeah, you gotta love a 45 day season with earn-a-buck.
Hunt a we bit south of Madison, don't like the DNR at this time.

On topic, have not shot one with a handgun yet, or any deer in a couple of years, pass up bad shots and little deer to those that like to do those things

I am a new member and my first post.  Just found the site a few days ago.

Hang in there and you will get yours.  I have been hunting with a handgun for 5 years and have taken 1 small 8 pointer and 3 does.  Much more fun and challenging than with a long arm.

I am in agreement with you myronman....GOOCHER!!!!!!!

Here is a recap of my season here in Illinois.

Ruger SRH in .44 Magnum...the first year Illinois has allowed handguns during the regular firearms season.

First Season:

Friday, November 21st
I am shooting over an open clover field.  The only thing I saw all day was the tail end of one doe in the woods behind me and a doe my buddy shot.   I am always amazed on how quite they can be walking through the woods.

Got violently ill with the flu early Saturday morning so that wiped out Saturday, November 22nd and Sunday, November 23rd.

Second Season:

Thursday, December 4th thru Sunday, December 7th the only deer I saw (in over 36 hours of stand time) were two does.  One was my buddies that I helped drag out and the other was another hunters on a piece of adjoining property that I also helped to drag out.

I drew two muzzleloader tags but will be unable to use them this weekend because I start a new job up in Madison, WI on Monday, December 15th.

My buddy has offered some of his venison to me...I guess it's the payback I get for helping him track, drag and field dress the 2 deer he shot

Steve
