I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THE RUGER NO.1 IN THE 1-H IS AS BALANCED AS THE 1-V .WOULD ANYONE TAKE THE 405 OVER THE 45-70

1. The 1-H is NOT balanced like a 1-V. The barrel has different contour and a LOT more metal removed from the bore. They have a considerably different feel.

2. I guess the choice of caliber is very personal and will largely depend upon the intended use. I have the .45-70, and would like to have a .405, but will not trade one for the other. I'll just have to add one more to my collection - DARN! You may have a different outlook.

i had a 45-70 in a 1-s it is lighter than the 1-h.taking the heavyer 1-h in the woods do'nt bother me. but i not like a gun that is FRONT HEAVY.
i do'nt know anyone with a 1-h and the gun shops will only get one in if you order it.so i can't hold one. so if it is not, to unbalance i'll get one.
theres always the 45-70 i know want its like.

CHANGED MY MINED ABOUT 405 WIN.GOING TO BUY ANOTHER 45-70.EATHER IN #1-S STAINLESS OR A MARLIN 1895 GS .I HAVE NEVER OWNED A MARLIN LEVERGUN .

Never held or fired the Guide Gun but I have the full sized 1895 (Used to be called the 1895SS.), and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I wish it had the recoil pad the Guide Gun has however.

Dave,
The guide gun is a little short for me, and it's ported barrel will give you a blast.

I like my little ruger #1. I'm not limited to flat pointed bullets, and it gets a little better velocity with its 22'' barrel with the basic same length of rifle.

I use a barnes X 300gn SP with IMR-4198 out of my rifle you can get about 2160, and it is hell on what is ever on the business end.

Dave,

If you don't care for muzzle blast, stay away from the Guide Gun as even the unported barrel will make a brass monkey flinch. :eek: Marlin is offering to replace any who bought a ported Guide Gun will replace it for a minor charge. If you want a .45-70 lever action then get the full size model and do your ears a favor. Lawdog

I've got the 22 in. barrel on the 1895 and now I'm wanting to get the 1895 Cowboy with the 26! The heavier the .45-70, the more fun it is to shoot!

I opted for the #1 in .405Winchester. It has good ballistics, kills large game well, was made for smokeless powder. The cartridge also fits in well with the rest of my .41 collection. I do like the .45-70(I have a Marlin 1895LTDV), just not as well as the .405Winchester. RKBA! :-)

Guess I'm the odd man outl but I have a Guide Gun and love it, blast and all. It's short, handy, easy to carry and I've got five shots to boot. As to recoil don't notice it much (never been recoil sensitive) but the ports keep the muzzle jump to a minimum. :wink:

I have a .45-70, ported guide gun, and I love it! It is easy to carry, and quick to point. Hopefully, I'll get to blood it in south Texas on a hog/javelina hunt, in about 4 wks. I don't think the recoil is bad at all. However, when it comes to recoil, the only gun that ever really got my attention was a .458 win. mag, in a 7 1/2 lb. rifle! :eek: After about 10 shots, it made my hair hurt! :shock:

I have the ported Guide Gun in 45-70. I love the gun and the cartridge! The barrel is short so it will be louder than usual. Havent had any muzzle blast, nor have those standing near. Maybe it's because I use a clean burning H4198 powder (51g) rather than the H335 that throws out a flame front you could light a cigar from...that might give some blast. It's great in the swamps where there's tangles of brush. The lever action cant be beat for that second shot and Marlin says the rest

I like the thrill of asking the young guys if they want to shoot it and they look at you like you've asked them to jump out of a tree stand.

I have had a 450 Marlin Guide gun with the 18 inch ported barrel for 3 years now and love the little bruiser.The muzzle ports or the recoil don't bother me in the least as at the range I use earplugs and a good set of muffs.When hunting I forget all about it when the adrenaline kicks in when a deer comes in range. I have only needed 1 shot to do the job on all the 5 deer I have killed with it so far.Beleive me when I tell you, when that bullet hits, it flattens them on the spot.No need for a tracking job!!! It is a great gun and mine h as a beautiful set of walnut stock and forearm on it and the trigger is just alittle over 4 lbs on a guage. This gun will never leave the safe for another home! Good luck with yours also.

I own a 450 Guide gun and a Ruger #1 in laminate/stainless in 375 H&H, I would not trade them both for the world, the #1 comes up a lot better than the guide gun, I use the 450 in the scrub and the 375 in the open.
I agree with Pete, about the power of the 450, I have also shot 5 deer and they went down like hit by lightning, I have also shot close to 300 Roo's with mine as well as half a dozen scrub bulls, she does the job! :wink:

Choppa- not to be smart or anything but I saw a few years ago that in Australia you couldnt own any guns that had more than 1 shot.I hope thats not the case for all of you over there.Big brother and their half-baked laws --aw to heck with it as its toooooooooo long of a subject to get into. Glad you like your guns.I also have a few # 1 Rugers and they aren't going anyplace either. Just out of curiousity, what do you do with the Kangaroos, are they good eating?? Wow this internet is way cool-here Im talking about whitetails and heres another member( a zillion miles away) talking about kangaroos!!!Got to love it?? Hey Chppa--got snow???

Pete,

We can pretty much own anything, aslong as they are not semi-auto or pump action, but you are aloud to have pump 22's and pump rifles such as remington 7600 and the like. You can get a licence to own a semi-auto but you must be employed as a pro shooter or a farmer.
Roo meat is good eating, very high in iron and very low fat, must be careful to not cook it for too long, similar cooking as to Venison, I usually shoot for dog meat, on permits off course!
As to snow, we dont get snow here, up a bit higher we do, it is the middle of summer here at the moment, my Wife is American, and she just had her first Christmas without snow, she couldnt get over it!

In response to Lawdog staying away from the 1895G. Its not a bench gun its a brush gun. Yeah, off the bench it tends to be a little ferocious with muzzle blast but in the brush its quick handling. I guess if your gonna do a lot of target shooting the longer model 1895 is for you but if your hunting with it go with the 1895G you wont notice the muzzle blast and its much easier to carry through the thick stuff.

You may not notice the muzzle blast BUT I guarantee your ears will. No BS, a medically proven fact. If you hunt the brush very much one of the senses you will be using a lot is your hearing which is hard to do with ear plugs in your ears. After over thirty years in law enforcement and all the hunting/shooting I have lost enough hearing to know it does not take much to take it away. The longer barrel puts the sound farther away from your ears and the added barrel length isn't that much of a problem in the brush. I hunt the brush all the time using 26 inch barrels and never wished I had anything shorter. Lawdog

As per lawdog and Old Griz. Longer and heavier is better. Easier on the ears, shoulder and nerves. My 26' octagon Browning '86 carries just fine. If that's too heavy you just need to be off the couch more. Doing it is light years ahead of dreaming about it or talking about it.

I'll second that. I love the guide gun. However, the noise is similar to what a magnum handgun will produce...very "shrill" for a bang. I'm looking into some sort of hearing device like the Game Ear or Woodland Whisper. My .270 was loud until the guide gun came along on the hunt!

I fired it three times in the swamp while driving deer (yeah, I stinkin' missed...but we all laughed) and my ears were ringing for a week or so.
