I don't know if this has been discussed before. On Friday evening on PBS there was an episode of "Groundwar". The episode was "Firepower".
All about early cannons and trebuchets to modern cannons. Very interesting. Here is the link:

I would have missed it, as when we went DIGITAL we no longer can get the PBS tv station.

Enjoyed the show, Ex 49'er; that was forum member Bob Smith featured in a few of the segments.

RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.
