New paint job and Question???
« on: September 21, 2010, 06:52:41 AM »
I just gave my old Handi 308 Survivor a new paint job, see below.
Now for the question, I have been shooting 180 grain Federal Fusions for several years. They group well and put down the deer. Well this morning I went to the range to check my scope before season, well 1st shot with Fusion put it an inch high at 100 yards, Good.  Then I started shooting 147 grain 7.62 round that was given to me. They went all over the place. What is the deal, any help?

Too small a bullet for the barrel to stabilize at what ever velocity those bullets have.
I've tried for weeks to get my 308 handi to shoot 150grn bullets, tried several kinds and differnt powders,,came to the conclusion it just doesn't like 150's or smaller,
It does like 165's! ;D

If it's milsurp, 7.62 Nato(7.62x51) is not the same ammo as 308 Win, there are differences.

I read years ago that the .308 was totally happy with 168 gr, boat tails.  I went there and never looked back.  Totally accurate to over 300 yards.

The bulk 147 grain is not noted for it's accuracy.

My 308 shoots sierra 180 game king the best, it does not like anything under 165gr.
an unloaded wepon is equal to the same mass and volume as a rock.

Kjump,

Maybe your barrel is too long. ;D  My shorty '06 loves the 147 grain FMJBTs steel core bullets, either Lake City or my reloads with pulled/resized bullets.  Both the 06 & 308 barrels have 1:10 twist, wonder why the 308 doesn't like the lighter bullets?  Also, I have a 308 that was rechambered to 308x444 and it shoots 150 grain SPs, flat base, just fine.
