30-30 at the range
« on: June 05, 2010, 10:37:22 AM »
took two 30-30's to the range today with two different kinds of factory ammo....lookin for a hunting load. My handi is a factory 30-30 barrel,sb2 frame, camo lam stockset and a 2.5x20mm simmons shotgun scope mounted low in front of the hammer. The first 3 went into a triangular 1" group at 100yds (150 gr corelokt) that made me very happy. Shot 3 more, looked at the target, but couldn't find the third hole, the first two were touching. Walked down to the target and discovered that two rounds tried to go thru the SAME HOLE, for a group that measured 3/4 ". Considering the low magnification of my scope that's real good for this old man. The 150 gr winchester ammo did just under two inches but the corelokts won. What was even better was the Marlin 336 i took shot the corelokts better than the winchester too. 8)

Spanky, I gotta disagree wid ya on dis one.  I've got about a dozen empty boxes of Core Lokts to reload, and I went back to the old Win 170 gr. Silvertips  The Cor Lokts did complete pass throughs on deer, but didn't drop the deer right there.  The old Silvertips do.  I'm too old to be chasing wounded deer around the woods at Dark Thirty.  Now, out of the .308 and 06, they seem to work fine.....higher velocity, more mushrooming??
Donno.

I don't have a NEF .30-30, but I have a Marlin .30-30 that will print the 170 gr. Cor-lockts exactly 1 inch lower at 75 yards than the 150 gr. Cor-lockts. The deer I shot with the 150 gr, I found the bullet on the back side of the hide, and it was a perfect mushroom. My father in-law has an NEF .30-30, and he swears by the blue box Federals in it. Honestly, I think it's the only ammo he has shot through it.

Accuracy/cost wise it's had to beat the red/black Federal Power Shok's from Wally World (at least around here where they sell them) $13.95 a box ain't bad at all,and the 150's and 170's  have shot exceptionally well out of my Marlins and H&R's. For hogs,I would bump it up a notch and get some of the Fusion ammo. Nothing like a good bonded bullet at a working mans budget..not to mention they shoot the same as the cheaper Power Shok's. They run about $24 a box now-a-days around here.

Glad the Core Lok's shoot good for you..it's nice to have factory ammo do so well..

I've got 4 of the simmons 2.5x20 scopes. I got 'em all cheap on ebay. I've only got one mounted on a Handi though... it's on my 32-20 Trotter Special.

got around to looking at my target today....interesting stuff. in the handi the corelokt and the winchester  groups were about 1 1/2 apart. Either one would be good to go for hunting with no scope change....a real good thing. The marlin groups were a little wider(2") but basically went to the same place too....the handi has a little better trigger thanks to what i've learned around here. The guy next to me got po-d and left.....he showed up bragging up this stainless remington 700 bolt gun with gigantic scope(308)....it was a nice gun but he couldn't shoot it worth a darn :D I kept my yap shut and just sat there putting the corelocts thru the same hole with my pos 275 dollar single shot and pos less than 50 dollar scope ;).....sometimes less is more 8)

I went to a shoot a while back and all I took were Handis.  There were a bunch of good shots with very expensive rifles and scopes.  I didn't out shoot anyone, but the Handis held their own and got a lot interest and positive comments.

My 30-30 handi likes the Federals best. Which is nice because they are the cheapest,  just under $12.00 a box at Wal-Mart.
