Range report - 223 project
« on: June 03, 2010, 03:14:33 PM »
Well, I had almost given up on this gun and would have likely not gotten another Handi.  I did get a new stock set and got it installed, including a rubber grommet on the barrel lug between the forend and barrel.  I also had reinstalled the scope mount following recommendations I found here.  Bore sighted the scope and wasn't happy as I almost had to bottom it out left. This is a problem I need to solve, but I still went to the range today.  Luck was with me and the bore sighted windage was very true, and I was only an inch low at 100 yards.  I had given the little gun a good cleaning so I expected to have to put a couple down range before making any adjustments.  If I can get the picture to post up, you will see the first 2 were almost hole to hole, so I adjusted up for the inch and fired three for effect.  Man, again if the picture will post, you will see what is the best 3 round group I've ever shot at 100 yards out of any rifle.  So I went from very disappointed to very happy thanks to all the good information I've found here and owe all of you a BIG THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for posting up the pictures guys!!!!!!  I'll figure out how to do it one of these days.... ;)

Now the coyotes are in big trouble, and so are the pigs!  The only problem now is figuring out which handi I want next.  From the info I read here adding a barrel to this one is not an option as it is a 1989 make NEF.  So now to see if I want a 22-250, .308 or the Buffalo Classic.  Right not I'm leaning towards the BC, always wanted a Sharps, but never could afford one.  A 45-70 BC would get me where I want to be I think and momma didn't say no when I showed it to her the other day....:)

Handi's are addicting and 45-70s even more so I wound up with 2 on the same day and love them both. nice shooting by the way.

Those are nice rifles. They shoot very well & don't cost near as much as other brands. ;)

AHK,

Congrats on tweaking your 223.  Go with the BC 45 70 next as folks have said they are very addictive.  I always take as least one 45/70 to the range and I shoot more 45/70 rounds that I shoot out of my 223.  Be careful if you get a 45/70 because it only takes about $50 dollars and 90 minutes and you'll have a 45/120 and at that point you have officially crossed over the line. ;D

BB, I've kind of always wanted a 45-110, well at least after I saw the Quigley Down Under movie.  I had plans to buy one of the Shiloh Sharps Quigley rifles in 45-110 but never could justify the $3500 and 1+ year wait.  So, maybe, just maybe if I get a BC I'll have to think about getting it upped to 45-110 or 120......;)

Just got my new .223 home.  Swapped off the pallet woods stock for a cinamon lamanate and installed a Bushnell Ledgend on her.  Now I need to get to the range and see what she can do!  44 Man

Yes both of them are 45-70s That second one I bought off here. I'm in the process of refinishing the stock set on it. I will post some more pictures when I'm done. I can't wait for it to go to deer camp.
