I could tell my russian m44 was brand new because the date in the receiver (1944) matched the date on the barrel. It was $114 at the time. Listen to Mikey because he and his brother dialed there's in. Its funny how crude these look and were made but they still shoot so good. I think some of these mosins shoot a tad more accurate than the german 8mm mausers.

I bought it from UTG on EBay. It's a cheap piece of junk, but it works once you apply a liberal amount of loctite. It looks to be the same as the Leapers and a few other ones out there. Same mount, different names.

I got into C&R's about 10yrs ago when I retired. I was able to still pick up different Mausers and Mosins for cheap. The 91/30 Hex's may be my favorite, but I have 44's, a 38, and a 91/59 carbines. I have a couple of the Finn Mod 39's. They are my most accurate. The Finns are the real pawn shop sleepers, because they are not as purty as a 91/30 and are longer than the carbines. Mine have pistol grip stocks and the wood has no finish (boiled?).

"Milsurpshooter.Net" is a great frame of reference site for Mosins.

The only Russian I have handloaded for is my M38 and it shoots very well with Varget pushing the Winchester 150 gr. Power Point (inspite of a .308" bullet diameter) ...... regular hits at 45 yds with original sights on ........ golf balls.

Any old rifle that looks like a fence post shooting the wrong size bullet that hits golf balls ......... is a KEEPER! Wait til I figure out a peep sight and update the trigger!

Three 44s

You might want to look into the MOJO peep sights. They replace the existing rear sights with no gunsmithing required, so you don't permanently alter the gun.

I bought one from "darrells scout mounts" as best as I can remember the spelling. It cost a bit more, but has been rock-solid for three years now.

Bought a 59 back in 1998 from a tramp miner. Bought rifle sling and 2 sardine cans of ammo. 880 rounds and and 2 boxes of Norma 180 grain soft point 180 grs. for $75 . I love it for hogs. Pull the military and cut powder to 43 gr. and put in a Remington 180 gr. 303 british bullet. MAN WHAT A FLAME THROWER!!

No shortage of info out there for Mosins.
Parallax Bill and 7.62x54.com I think are the best, imo.
Surplusrifle.com has the best info on sporterizing, like mentioned.

You could build an entire collection just on Mosins and take years to complete with all the varieties

i have a russain m44 and i love it i can hit a gong at 200 yards every time but i have put the monte calo stock and a scope on it. if you have not shot it i recemend getting a recoil pad. without it it kicks like a mule because of the metal buttplate. i put a muzzle brake on mmine also to reduce the recoil and it helps alot. hope you like it because i love mine

Mine has a small recoil pad, but I love taking it off when I'm shooting with others, because they always want to shoot it and I'm more than happy to oblige. So far, no one has fired more than one round without the recoil pad on. It's a lot more recoil than you would expect.

Yup, VERY judgemental on the field dressing.....I was worried about the height of the railing on that deck!

Have a few Mosins and like them all. I shoot all flavors of milsurp and reloads. I have "dialed in" all rifles with bayonet folded. I used to extend bayo but found it to be more dangerous than the actual shooting.

I have a FUN toy at home..........bought a set of 3 M-44 from a guy on the internet. I Knew they were a basket case. One of them has a length issue......not a LEGAL length issue mind you......it was "trimmed back a touch". The Person was going to make a Scout rifle apparently. Had a scout scope mount and the barrel is all of 17" I bet. Recrowned it decent as well

I got it with a broken off bolt handle (assume it was going to get a bent bolt at sometime) and missing a mag well. I of course just HAD to shoot it. Cobbled it together with parts and you think an M-44 throws flames?

No kidding, the ugliest thing you ever have seen.......the barrel is about an inch past the front handguard...of course after I installed one as it was lacking one when I got it. The guy I got them from (3 of them for $60 delivered) bought them from a "storage locker" auction. You bid on it and win what was inside. 3 parted out and wierded up Mosins......I did salvage a nice Hungarian from the pile though!!! (it helped that I had already bought 10 U'fixems from Century, so Hungarian parts already on hand)

Mosins are fun period. Simple, reliable and a fair horsepower for the buck. Don't have a 91/59 but really like my 38 with 180gr slug and reduced H4895. Slow and steady shoots a ringer!

I have both the M44 and the M91. I shoot the M44 with the bayonet folded back and it shoots good. I have not grouped it with it folded out yet. The M44's definitely get some attention when you shoot them.

Out of my 10 Mosin Nagants, 3 are carbines. I have an M38, an M44, and a 91/59.

My favorite of the 3 is my 91/59.

Keep an eye out at www.allansarmory.com , www.aimsurplus.com , www.southernohiogun.com , www.empirearms.com and www.centuryarms.com for the mosin m91/59's, the M44's and the M38's showing up time to time in small amounts. They seem to pop up time to time but they sell out quickly so you have to move fast. Don't forget the 91/30's while we still can get them too. If you see any finnish captured mosins that are priced right i'd jump on them too. But i have seen some bad ones at gun shows that were probably under the snow for a longtime. There a piece of history and were priced like it too.

I guess that most collectors collect a few of one gun like mausers or mosins but i like them all anything that shoots gets my vote....
