45-70 sabot

Has anyone tryed and 45-70 bullet in a sabot.  I was thinking about useing a .458 bullet in a .452 sabot.  Will it work?  Will the presure be too high?  I was thinking about getting a 340gr or 405gr bullet mold.  My brother has a 45-70 New England and I thought it would be nice to cast bullets for it and my inline.

I've shot the 330gr Gould HP(457122) in a sabot before, accuracy was ok, never hunted with it tho.

It's my standard load in my .50 CVA recently.  Plan to hunt it this fall.  I'm getting 1-1/2" groups at 100, plenty good for where I hunt.

Depends on what size your bullets drop out of the mold, or you could resize them a little smaller. MMP makes an orange sabot for .458" bullets, and the black Harvester Crush Rib Sabot for .452" bullets will sometimes work in the larger .50 bores with .458" bullets.

.50 caliber bores range from .499" to .504" generally, so if you have a tight bore, a .458" bullet may not work to good in a standard .452" sabot.

What kind of inline are you shooting?

I've shot .458's out of my Knight Disc 50.... I used the 330 Gould and Lyman 535 Postell.... my best groups came with MMP's Orange .458 sabots... I tried the Harvestor Crush Rib in .452, but did not get as tight groups...... a few years back, Knight sold .458 sabots that were Orange(probably made by MMP).     As far as accuracy goes IN MY RIFLE.... I got great groups out of the 535 Postell and was able to hit a crow-size metal spinning target @ 187 yds with ease off a bench... but the drop was huge!  I only hunted with the load 1 time and killed a nice doe.....I'm currently playing with the 330 Gould as I now have a mold and have been able to get groups running between 1.3-1.75" @ 100 yds using BH 209.... thinking I will try it this year in the deer woods... still have some more testing to do...It is easier on the sholder than the 535!

 I have a mossberg 50cal. barrel for a 500.  It's just something to play with and maybe deer hunt with if rifle season doesn't go well.   Shots will be less that 75 yards.  I was looking at the price of sabot bullets and thought why not just buy a lee mold.  I already have a lot of wheel weights and soft lead.  Just wanting to have some cheap fun.

I shoot a variety of .458 (45-70) bullets in my 50 caliber muzzleloaders - all of them Knights, Remingtons, Omega's, Triumph, and Whites...

I use the MMP HPH-.457/.458-50 Orange sabot.  They work very well and are very accrate.  I normally use the .458's on larger game like elk, but last season I was using a Knight DISC with a .458/275 grain Lehigh bullet and havested a buck with it... worked great...
