sitting on deer stand yesterday, coyote comes rambleing along at bout 100 yrds. he stops and i shoot him right behind the shoulder with the o6, 125 grn nosler ballsitic tip. down he goes. 10 min later i look up and he is up trotting around like nutting ever happened. thru scope i can see big spot of blood on the side that would be the exit side, exactly where i was aiming, right behind shoulder. ok i watch him i little while longer and when he turns to face me i shoot him right in center of the chest, still about 100yrds. this time he is down for good. i walked over and looked at him, the first round had a exit hole you could put 2 fingers in and looked to me like it should of turned his lungs to mush. i was flabber gasted to say the least that he was up trotting around with a wound like that. god those things are tough!

Sounds like the bullet didn't expand and do any damage on it's way through. So did you skin it to find out what the wound channel looked like?
I've had rabbits do this with 22LR solids-shoot them fall over then get up and run when I'd go over to pick them up. :shock: I'm curious cause I just bought some of those 125 gr BT for yote hunting.

puma, no i didnt skin this yote. he had some kind of parasite problem going on. the exit wound was large with tissue and stuff hanging out. when i shot him the second time with same bullet it did not even exit from the frontal shot. when i rolled him over he sounded like a innertube full of water. so from that im guessing there was some serious expansion going on that time. like i said, it was weird. have shot some deer with this bullet and it seemed to work well. buuuttt i went back to my tried and true .243 till i do a little more testing. happy hunting!!

The 125 gr. weight is about right for a coyote's lighter body mass and bone structure and too light for a deer's(at least on deer over 125 pounds). If it were me I would switch to a 150 gr. at least for deer and if you want to use Ballistic Tips stay under 2,900 fps. so they don't break up on contact. Lawdog

yes im thinking of switching to the 150 grn, i realize it is the primo bullet for deer. but i have killed 3 deer with this load and it performed perfectly. id have to check but im thinking it is around 3000 fps. i always have gotten complete penertration with good exit wound and plenty of blood loss. oh well half the fun is werkin up a new load and trying it out. happy huntin!

hey can i get a 50 bmg in a model seven remington? or how about a mini-50 by ruger?
