Wanted:Enfield Number 4 bolt head 3
« on: April 05, 2010, 04:56:26 PM »
My current bolt head is a 2. Where would I get such a thing? SARCO?

ADJUSTING HEADSPACE FOR THE NO 4 RIFLE

If you've got a No 4 rifle, check the bolt head. On the top, there is a number stamped into the metal. The numbers go from "0" to "3". Each increment of one adds 3 thousandths of an inch to the length of the bolt head. If the number stamped there is 0, 1 or 2 you will be able to adjust the headspace by simply removing (unscrewing) the bolt head and installing another with the next highest number. It will be necessary for you to check using the gauges again.

I dunno, it's my understanding that the #3, which is what I have on my No.4 MK1* is the most rare.  Good luck!

Makes sense. SARCO lists part numbers for 0, 1, and 2 online but no stock. And on p 74 of their April 10th ad, they even have a special on bolt head 1. And show a price for a "standard" bolt head, whatever that may be. There appears to be a brand new bolt head 2 on Ebay. Not too sure where else to look, especially since it is not too urgent a matter.

Not to be sarcastic or funny but #3 bolt heads must be made out of unobtainium. I got one from a friend in austrailia. Springfield sporters used to have 1 & 2's but I think although they list them they may not have any more. What you might want to consider is mikeing the right lug from where it starts at the rear and to the front of the bolt. Then try getting another bolt with slightly longer measurements. You may find with a bolt that measures longer on the right lug you won't need a #3 bolt head. Frank

I've been looking for a #2 bolt head.  Should yours become available, I would be very interested in purchasing it.

Thanks.

Not sure if I'm selling. There is a #2 on Ebay with 4-5 hours to go. Search "enfield bolt head".

before ya lose all hope, if your only off a very few thousands, and  ya can find them, the bolt heads  even marked #2 will vary in length(by a small amount) you should try another #2 or 2 or three it might tighten things up enough

You need to measure the bolt head you have and find a longer one, obviously :D  BUT you can not rely on just going by the bolt head number.  This chart was but together after measuring numerous bolt heads, thanks to Alan De Enfield.
It's possible you could find a #2 longer than the #2 you have and you could buy a #3 ($80-100 on e-bay and gunbroker) that  is shorter than your #2.

You have wear issues at the lugs on the bolt and the receiver.  Some times a new bolt well give you some more needed length along with a longer bolt head.

I have 2 Lee Enfields, a No. 4 and a No. 5. Both bolt heads are still on "0". ;D

Walked into the local auction house today and lot 220 was a sporter with a #3. Drove 5 minutes home intending to hurry back, put the baby to bed and passed out myself. Probably sold an hour ago for short money. Guess I did not want it that bad.

There is a seller on Auction Arms who lists #4 bolt heads from time to time. You may ant to search around in the closed auctions as well as the active auctions. The price will beat the heck out of evil-bay's prices.
