50 140
« on: June 05, 2010, 04:36:10 AM »
Hi All,

I have just started load development for my 45 120 and am already thinking of the next project.  I have tons of furniture that needs refinished but I prefer to play with the metal parts of the Handi.  Once or twice I have read posts in this forum regarding a 50-140, not a finished gun but an I idea for a project.  A little research and it appears that this would have to be a rebore as well as a rechamber, or maybe a stub job?  My little experience with a 11 pound 45 120 suggests that a 50 140 better be at least 14 pounds.  Anybody put one together or want to share there thoughts on the project please post.

thanks

BB, I stubbed a .50-90 last year using a full diameter barrel blank from GPC. It weighs in at 12 pounds and I'm glad it does. Trailboss loads with the Lyman #515141 (450 gns) sized .512 are a real kick, so to speak.  ;D

Joe,

Would it work to rebore/rechamber a 45/70 handi barrel or are you removing too much metal from the chamber?

Seriously, is the .500 S&W the wrong diameter or twist?  Just curious.  Not heavy into pain.  My .445 and .45-70 are all I want to mess with.

Pete

The cartridge drawing I found for 50 140 shows .512 for the nominal bullet diameter.  The 500 S&W, I believe, is .500.  I looked at Wayne's Orgeon Gunsmith website and he shows a rebore up to .508 so I don't think he is an option.

I am not trying to kill myself with these projects.  I am keeping the pressures down and the weight of the guns up.  The 45 120 I have will toss a 535 grain postel over 1,500 FPS and not kick as bad as a unmodified 22" 45/70 Handi with a 325 grain Hornady factory load.

Where I am headed with this stuff is to be able to shoot the 500 yard range at a club about an hour from my house.  The 50 140 is so I have an "iron sight" gun to go with the scoped 45 120.  Probably have to scarifice another BC 45/70 barrel to get the length I need for the slow burning powders.  Both will be shot with smokeless, I've had read enough not to try either with a compressed load of black powder!

The 500S&W has a .500" bore, the .50-140 is .510-512", the .500 Martin would be a 50-70 equivalent using the H&R barrel for a rechamber, but a 22" barrel wouldn't be my choice, I'd have Wayne rebore/rechamber a BC barrel, I think .508" would be close enough for cast bullets, and he should be able to make it slightly larger if necessary, my 405 Win is slightly over .411".

Many easy ways to get a 500/140 using a 500 S&W barrel...

First...have a set of dies made at CH4D for the BULLET size...same price as the 50-140 dies, I've already checked...use 50-140 brass.

Second...have CH4D make you a bullet sizing die to reduce .510 size bullets to .504-.508"...

...OR, even better, if you want to shoot lead bullets, have a mould made to your desired size.

Third...if you want to use jacketed bullets, use those designed for the 505 Gibbs and again have a sizer die made to reduce the bullet OD to fit the .500 bore.

There are MANY .500 cal cartridges available or ways to use available brass of many sizes...GOTO AmmoGuide, pay your 20 bucks yearly fee and open up a WHOLE NEW WORLD of available toys.

I think there is quite a bit of information already on this forum...just do some searching...And also on Cast Bullets(I think).

In reality tho', for the 22" barrel length I would just go with Ed's 499 HE and call it good...it's already fully developed and all the components are available.

A stub 30-36" barrel for the actual 50-140 would be my next choice for either BP or Smokeless on the NEF frame.

Want sticker shock...check out the prices of 50-140 dies first.

Luck

NFG,

Don't you hate it when reality (they wife) gets in the way of a great plan?  I ran some prelimary costs by her and I got the "LOOK".  Then see says why don't you just get another 45 120 since you can already load for it?  So maybe my "iron sight" gun for 500 yards will be another 45/70 BC, after I ream it out.  Would be a lot cheaper, but a 50 cal cartridge 3 1/4" long is really cool.  Maybe I will just buy one of the old 50/140 display cartridges and carry with me in my ammo box.

thanks all for your posts.

This the blank I used, and I'm sure that they're out of stock, although you can check with them at
(845)679-4867:

It's a .510 bore X 24" twist. The bore diameter really isn't a problem; you can get or cast them in just about whatever size you want, and can change the diameter just by changing the alloy.
You should consider the .50-90 Sharps; the cases are a buck and a half apiece from Starline
as opposed to 65 bucks a box for the .50-140 from Bertram and 2.99 each from Jamison.

Oh, Man....25 bucks for a 50 cal barrel...perfect for a stub barrel job.  I checked and no 28" bbls left but do have a 26" turned and tapered S.S. including breach plug I jumped on.

The costs just escalate geometrically when you start getting up into the larger cases...MORE powder also...brass cost is just ONE of the reasons I put this project on the back burner...I did buy 5 Jamison cases just too look at and drool on.  ;D  :P

BUT waving one of those 4" plus rounds about sure gets attention...I have a 12GaFH case with a LONG brass bullet shaped like a 50 BMG slug I turned and stuck in it just for those occasions...waving that 5.5" thing around REALLY gets the looks.  LOL  Hahahahaha  BIGGER is ALWAYS BETTER.

Ed's 499 is just as impressive and a lot more economical...although you're still looking at a good chunk of change.  AND the 50-90, 105 CC, is "only" 3/4" shorter and there is the 500 Nitro 3" at 132 CC...The 500 Martin will get you about 86 CC...about 25% more for much less than the others.

Besides, as Pete says...how much kill'n you need?  :o  Hahahahahaha

So there are several less expensive ways to get more whack out of the 500 S&W and the reamers are available to rent for some of them.

Many ways to go to get there...I still have several biggies on my "todo" list I have absolutely NO need whatsoever for.

I don't have that wife problem anymore...something much worse...REALITY...all those raiders and pirates  yell'n "WHAT'S IN YOUR WALLET".   Hahahahahahahahah
