FINALLY...... and a range report
« on: June 08, 2010, 02:04:46 PM »
well some of you may remember me. my wonderful wife put me a NEF 45-70 handi under the christmas tree this year. i was in nursing school and didnt have the time (or the money after x mas) to put a scope on it. so a few weeks ago i got out of school and purchased a nikon pro staff 3x9x40 bdc reticle scope mounted with warne bases and rings. my brother and took it out to the range to sight it in along with my browning A-bolt 300 wsm topped with a zeiss 3x9x40 she got me last time jesus had a birthday(i love birthdays) and my wifes stevens 200 7mm-08.  i wanted to pop off the handi first since it had never even been loaded and at 25 was about 10in low and to the right (i thought the genius had bore sighted it when i bought the scope) so i brought the crosshairs to the scope and popped one off. close enough, similar at 50 maybe 4 in to the right so i centered it. at 100 i was 1 in high and 4 to the right. 16 clicks later i was on target and let thebarrel cool while i sighted in another. when i came back to it i cleaned the bore and popped one off 1" high half inch to the right second shot 1" high dead center touching the 1st shot, and 3rd shot 1" high and touching on the left. now i didnt let the barrel cool between shots and im happy as hell with that. so ill be playing more with it but am afraid to try any accurizing techniqes becasue it shoots well already. maybe as i set my ranges with the bdc reticle i may try some. my browning sighted in nicely i was having trouble getting it to settle at 100 be after i took the sling off the groups tightned and were hitting 1" high and 1" to the rightin about a 1 1/2 group with a hot barrel ill spend more time wwith it later it was getting hot out. but the most puzzleing was my wifes stevens, im no expert but  i belive there is a stress relieff process barrels go through and this one must not have. i got it on center at 100 with a cool barrel but the fallow up shots qwere 3 and 5 inches high and 1.5" to the right. after it cooled it setled back to the original p.o.i or close to it not sure whats goin on here but i dont like it and my be shopping for her a new gu. it will kill cold but i aint happy. i may call savage tomarrow its 2 years old but its only had 2 boxes through it since its purchase. maybe they can fix it free of charge

If you ever divorce your wife, can I have her number and address......... ;D

Really that is awesome!!!!!!  You are a lucky man and need to thank God for your good luck!  On the rifle side of things, is sound like your luck is holding true as well.  Keep us posted with further reports.

That's surprising about the Stevens... mine in 22-250 shoots great. :-\
I'd give 'em a call and see what they will do about it.

Sounds like you have something in the barrel channel touching the barrel.  Pull the action and see if there are any spots in the stock that show wear marks and sand them down.  DP

well i called savage and they said it wasnt under warranty (3 yrs old) but if it was manufacturer defect ect. they would prolly fix it free of charge since it wasnt user damage. so im gona prolly send it back and see if they can fix it, if not ill sell it and buy her a browning. i got a remington 7400 in .280 im looking to part with cause it sits in the safe and i never shoot it. i like the gun but i have 3 other deer rifles already and id like the money to get her the browning. i too have heard that the stevens were accurate but even cadillac makes a lemon every now and then.
