The 30-06 is loaded to over 50k pressure. The small ring mausers are only recommended to about  45k. i have two 1891's in their origional chamberings and one has a sporter stock and the other is a cut down military stock. Check out the lee handloading manual. I believe that somewhere in it they do show how to figure out reduced loads with jacketed bullets. Funny thing, many years ago I removed the military bullet and substituted the 115 grain jacketed bullet in 5 cartridges. Just for the scientific curiosity of course. First shot never made it to the target. Blew up on the way. second shot made ti to about 3/4 of the way and nosedived into the ground. well to make a long story short only had two shots hit the target. One blew up on the paper and one made it through the paper. you could use the 123 grain or 150 grain bullet loaded down to reduce recoil. But please don't rechamber to 30-06 as your safety and that of the guy next to you could be in danger. If you wish to sell it then do so and get a stevens in 30-06 and you will have a fine modern rifle capable of taking down just about anything that walks, and reduced loads 40grs 4895 with sierra 125 grain 30 caliber you have what used to be called a 300 meter load. Very accurate, little recoil, cheap to assemble what more could you ask for. In fact you could use the same 40grains 4895 and the 125 .311 dia bullet and have fun without the barking. Frank

I have a few good rifles in '06 already and i don't plan on shooting '06 out of mt '91 arg.

I can get the 7,62x39 chamber adapter in a 30-06 outer case so if i reream the 7,65 arg barrel to 30-06 then i can use the chamer adapter to 7,62x39 so it can shoot the sks ammo.  The barrel bore is already the right size too.  If the bolt extractor will hold the 7,62x39 round and it will feed out of the mag properly then its a good easy conversion.  I always wanted a cheap rifle in 7,62x39 to play with.  Plus the 154gr soft point bullets in 7,62x39 make another game getter too. Or with the 123gr or 125gr soft points makes it a good short varmit gun too. Since there is no collector value in it with it being a cutdown i don't feel there is any loss in converting it.

Now i'm rethinking my ideas since the 7,65x53 round really barks with the carbines and my barrel bore is .310/.311" i'm thinking of rereaming it to a 30-06 and installing a chamber adapter to a 7,62x39 russian.  This would give me a great rifle for one of the grandkids. Since its been a cut down and its not a real collectors piece.

Instead of going thru all that effort (and expense) why don't you just work up some reduced power handloads. If the bore is in good condition, cast bullets can be used for a REAL light load suitable for younger children.

Actually I think that you are wrong in that your cut down 1891 argie has no value. Have you seen the prices on the 1895 chilean 7mm short rifles? Most of the short rifles/carbines today are kind of a hot seller.Granted its your rifle and its yours to do with as you please, but there are a lot of guys who drool over a well done cut down rifle to carbine and since well done is the key here can expect to get some nice bucks. I bought a few 1891 argies that have been bubbaized for cheap money. Have plans for one to become a carbine. Like yours it will never be one of those 6 3/4 pound wonders with the plastic stock, but steel and iron. Handloading will bet you there and its fun doing it. Frank

Ok my problem continues with my '1891 arg carbine.  I ordered new priv-partizan brass and changed over two rounds of the surplus to the new cases and the bolt is still hard to close when the ammo is chambered even with the new brass.  I was told that the arg surplus rounds had poor quality control and that the brass was sized wrong.

Now i'm going to remove the barreled action from the stock to see if its tight when i try to chamber a round next.  If its ok then i think its the stock thats warping the barreled action.  I figure that this is my last check before rereaming the chamber.

I have run out of things to try, I even plosihed the chamber with the simi-chrome polish so i know its smooth too.

I can rent a 7,65x53 arg chamber reamer with the go & no go headspace gages.

Any thoughts on what else it can be as to why the bolt closes hard???

My thought would be to measure the chamber before taking a cutting tool to it. Make sure you can verify that its the wrong size.

1911Crazy:  when you say the bolt is hard to close, whatcha mean???  Is it difficult to chamber the round, that is, get it into the chamber from the magazine or close the bolt on a round you are stripping from the magazine?  Your action should be a cock on closing action - is that the difficulty you are experiencing.

Let's keep going on this until we figure it out.  HTH.

Mikey; Your right lets keep this going till we figure it out.  I always get torn away on some projects to do something else then i forget about it for years at a time.  I guess I'm growing old....yup old age...

Ok update;  Today i just ordered the chamber reamer in 7,65 argentine and i rented it with two headspace gages too a go & no go.  I just want to lightly kiss the chamber with the reamer to remove any burrs were the taper on the front of the brass case were its binding.  This should do it.  Well in a few days we'll know for sure.  I'm not forgetting to do this one its been sitting here for years now just waithing to be fixed.

I have 2 1891s, an original with chrome furniture and one that was sporterized when I got it. It now is on it's second barrel.

You can use the 123 or 125gr. .310" bullet and 2400 or Unique for a reduced load. H4895 can be used at 60% of the max listed load also.

I have used many different bullets over the years, including the 32 caliber pistol bullets with fast powders like Unique and Red Dot.

In the July Shooting times Lane Pearce has an article on handloading for the 7.65 and uses the 123 and 125 gr bullets in full power loads. He does write about forming cases from the 30-06, but and easier method than what he uses it to buy the trim die from RCBS. Lube, form, cut with a hacksaw, deburr, full length and load.

My sporter will group the Hornady 150gr with a full load of surplus 4895 into less than 2" at 200 yards. I have taken quite a few head of game with this gun. Usually use the 180gr. Rem roundnose and AA2520 for elk.

I don't think the extracter in a '91 will work well with the 7.62X39 as it is much smaller than the '98.

I wouldnt think that 7.62 would work well with a chamber adapter to a 30-06. A 7.62 is about .311 or so.
