Glock 17 vs 19 reliability
« on: May 01, 2010, 10:39:12 AM »
I am new to Glocks so if this is a dumb question please excuse my ignorance. Is the 17 more reliable than the 19? The famous Glock reliability is my main reason for wanting one, so its important to me.

I think that overall they should be equally reliable.
Now, I am an oddity in the shooting world apparently.  I have had 2 G34s, 1 G26, 1 G20 and 3 G19s.  All 3 G19s were not totally reliable.  The malfunctions I experienced were few and far between, but contrast that to the G34s, G26 and G20 which have never malfunctioned.  My next G will be a G17.

I've had Glocks in every caliber from 9mm to 45 to 10mm and they are all reliable.

Not all Glocks are good ! I had one that would not feed . It was a G23. The factory repair center in GA. took care of it fast . And we talk about them in such high regard when shooting Glock matches and other matches Glock would often have someone checking and replacing parts free because they were out of spec. I always took used guns to have the free parts replaced . But it makes you think if its so good why the parts need to be replaced ? ???
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I'm not a Glock hater, just pragmatic enough to see that NO gun = 'Perfection'.  :o
That said, I've had 17's and 19's, and a G36 (the oddball mini-.45). The 17's never gave me a lick of trouble.
While shooting Win/USA ball, one of the 19's demonstrated an infamous NY 'Phase-3' Malfunction.

The G36 has the worst rep among them all, but the sole copy I had was A-O/K.

My 19 (3rd gen) has been flawless. I had a few issues with an older G-20 and G-35, but the 9mm's (19,17,17L) have been 100%.

With the factory barrel my 19 has never had any problems.  The Lone Wolf barrel I use with reloads requires a very stiff wrist or it can fail to eject.

If I could only own one Glock it would be a 17. You will also get a little more velocity with the 17 over the 19.

I owned one of the first Glock 19's to be imported.  Never, ever had a problem with factory loads of any kind.  Maybe 8 or 9 thousand thru the gun.  It did have problems with cast lead reloads that used bullets slightly over size; loads that would work in say a Smith or HK auto.  Lead bullets sized the same diameter as a FMJ always fed reliably in that pistol.  Minimum spec chamber I suspect.  Very Accurate as well.  Never should have sold it.  I now have a model 26 that has also proven 100% reliable with about 5 or 6 thousand factory loads thru it.  Have not tried it with lead reloads as I don't bother reloading for the 9mm any more, until I burn up whats left of my factory stuff.
