State Accepting Nominations for 2010 Christmas Tree

June 15, 2010

Lansing - The State of Michigan has opened the door for nominations for the 2010 Christmas tree, but this tree won't fit through the front door. A Charlie Brown tree just won't do as the state begins its search for a 65-foot spruce or fir for the Capitol lawn.

The Department of Technology, Management and Budget (DTMB), with help from the Michigan Association of Timbermen and the Great Lakes Timber Professionals Association, will work to bring the tree to Lansing, regardless of the tree's Michigan location. "We've found trees in the far reaches of the Upper Peninsula," said Ken Theis, director of DTMB. "We look forward to submissions from all across our great state."

The timbermen will cut the tree and transport it to Lansing at no cost to the state. The DTMB crew will then work with Hi-Ball Company of Lansing, which volunteers a crane and crew to set the tree.

The state requires the following in order for a tree to be considered:

      - Must be a spruce or fir
      - Height must be a minimum of 65 feet, with a maximum crown of
30 feetand a maximum trunk diameter of 30 inches
      - Easy access from a road with no interference from wires
      - Available at no cost

Nominations are requested by July 16, 2010. Individuals wishing to nominate a tree are asked to send their name, telephone number, a photograph of the tree and information about its size and location to:

      Holiday Tree Search
Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget
      Facilities Administration, Building Operations Division
      P.O. Box 30026
      Lansing, MI 48909

Photographs and information may also be submitted by e-mail to ChristmasTree@michigan.gov.
