Monkey Wards 16 ga. pump.
« on: May 14, 2010, 09:48:45 AM »
I got a Monkey wards 16 ga. pump used for my birthday 49 years ago. Today I stil;l have it but havn't shot it much since I got my Ithaca model 37 12ga. in 1970.
I alway liked that wards gun with the poly choke on it but it need some work. It fires when you rack a shell in the chamber.

The question how ever is, How do you find out who made them for wards?I know wards didn't make their own.

IIRC it was probably made by Mossberg. It could also have been made by Stevens. I think there were other makers also. Can't remember now who they were. A Western Field was my first shot gun. Bought it for $54 in 1960.

The Numrich Arms catalog used to have some pages of cross reference of makers in the back of the catalog.

Don't know if they still do, haven't bought a catalog for several years.

What is the model number? I might be able to look it up by the model number. Also, is it marked Montgomery Wards or Westernfield?

It is a Western Field.  I'll have to see if I can find the model number on it.

That brings back some memories, I used to work for Montgomery Ward, many of us called it "Monkey Wards", and appropriately so as it seemed to be managed by monkeys.  I worked at the Jantzen Beach, Portland, Oregon store in the early 80's.  They carried Smith and Wesson handguns there too, it was weird to shop for underwear, tools, and then see new revolvers under glass on the same floor.  You don't see that anymore with any retailer.
