i have a nice 788, shoots well, but the safety releases very easily. i would like to add some tension to it so it doesn't release so easy

The safety plate on the M788 has a detent that is actuated by a plunger (#40 on the attached diagram)a which is powered by a spring (#41 on the attached diagram). First be certain the safety retaining screw (#42) is tight and the safety retaining pin (#38) is restrainging the safety plate. The pin is held in place by an 'E' clip or as Remington describes it in #39 'safety pivot pin retaining washer'. If this clip is lost the pin can allow the safety plate to move away from the plunger and the detent action is lost. In extreme situations the safety may be compromised. If all else is good the spring (#41) for the safety plunger could be replaced with a stronger version. Use extreme caustion when working with the safety mechanism of any weapon..

The screw provides the tension adjustment for the detent plunger. If it's too loose there won't be enough tension on the safety plate and a dangerous situation can exist. If the hole is threaded it may be that the screw was lost and a pin installed to replace it. The simplest fix would be to install a shorter pin or space the current pin to a tighter position by installing a washer under the clip retaining the pin. This will put greater tension on the safety plate and make the detent a bit firmer..
