Blackhorn 209 ??
« on: August 10, 2010, 08:18:40 AM »
What's going on with Blackhorn 209? I can't get any local supplier to stock this powder with in 75 miles.
The only suppliers are on line and with the haz shipping charges, I refuse to pay $50 a can.
It seems to me they must be having marketing problems.

If it was me I'd find a way to get it. Got a partner to buddy buy with you from Powder Valley? How about your next road trip? You or another family member on their travels? Forgo a few things & order up.

Just ask the dealer to get a couple of cans when they place a powder order.  I think it's so expensive dealers are reluctant to stock it.  It's good stuff if your gun will handle it.

Cabelas is selling it for $19.95 in the stores right now. Might be worth a roadtrip if you have one close by? I think the sale is going to end next week sometime, so don't wait too long if you want to get it for that price. That is the best price that I have ever seen, and I believe that is below cost. I guess they want to get you in the store and sell you a rifle or something.

I have been shooting BH209 for about 2-1/2 years, best powder out there for smokin' muzzleloaders IMO. Get it while you can!

Yes, a good idea to call ahead. Oh, and that is $19.99 per jug, but still the best price I have ever seen.

I have two jugs(?) of BH209 that I paid $30+ for. Even at that price, it is still the best M/L powder I have ever used. After I tried it, I sold my old M/L and bought a new one to use BH209 in. It cleans up with regular cleaning supplies and the 5th bullet went down the tube as easy as the first, not to mention I got sub 2" groups at 100 yards. If I found it at $20 a jug, I'd buy a bunch of it. ;D

I only have 3  stores within 75 miles the closest one states "my supplier does not carry Blackhorn.
So I choked down the $25 has mat cost and ordered it from Midway.
If I like it, and from what I have read I will, I'll  shop around when I travel
Thanks for the replies

I bouht a conatiner today at a local shop.  he complained about it being so expensive no one wants to buy it. I got stung for 39.95 for a continer.  I said to the guy no wonder you arent selling it.  he has 6 more containers, which if this shoots well, I will buy one at a time.

You can nurse along a 10oz container for a good long while if you only hunt with it. If I have to start from scratch with a new scope my 1st charges are with no more than 80 grains of B209. I stay there until I get the scope close. For final site-in I go 110-120 grains & a 250 grn SST in my Knight. I hunted 2 years & took over 10 deer with one container of B209. I have another new jug I am about to open. If I was going to shoot a bunch at the range I'd use Pyrodex or 777, & clean up good afterward.

Sound like a good idea to get practice in 777 plus inexpensive bullets to get ones rhythm and practice in, Then re zero and confirm with Blackhorn and hunting bullet

I tried it in my encore yesterday.  I was very impressed. First shot was a hangfire but I think that was due to the oil in the barrel next time it will be swabbed before loading nd possibly a primer fired.  I was using 777 primers and after the first shot no problems. But I will get some regular winchester 209s this week and use the 777 primers when I shoot pyrodex.  Anyway 10 shots no wiping out or anything. Accuracy was awesome.  I shot 75 grains at 50 yards was all I could shoot as the 100 yard range was occupied. 5 shots in the center at 50 and a tighter group then pyrodex.  I shoot a 250 grain 44 caliber round nose lead bullet I mold myself in a crush rib sabot.  The best part is that I never had to move the scope. I plan to shoot with pyrodex when we go to play.  Next weekend I will try it in my sidekick and encore at 100.  When my paycheck shows up Friday, I will purchase another container and do so every check until I have the 6 containers the local guy has. In my area it is tough to get, so I guess I pay 39.95 a can.  I may set aside some money and purchase a quantity online to off set the shipping.  I would recommend it to anyone.
