New Sig 220
« on: July 26, 2010, 06:31:35 PM »
I just picked up a Sig 220 with the .22 conversion last week.  Very nice handgun.  I have about 400 rounds through it already.  Seems to like CCI Blazers (cheap stuff) and Mini Mags (expensive stuff) the best, and also the Federal 40 gr (1240 fps) copper plated solids.  They operated the gun flawlessly.  I'm thinking that as the gun breaks in the variety of ammo will increase.  Winchester ammo also worked well but not as flawlessly as the CCI's and Federal.

I plan on getting the .45 upper for Christmas.  But for now the .22 is great fun, and since I'm new to handguns, it's a good way to learn.  I think Sig is the only manufacturer offering the .22 conversion as an original purchase.  Nice program.  It's what drew me to Sig in the first place.

Neat. I'm considering a P220 as well.
Do they give you some kind of coupon for the .45acp upper?
Or are you on you own finding one?

Do they have any protection to prevent firing pin damage to the chamber if/when they are dry fired? (since they don't have last round hold open feature).

Sig gives you a serial numbered coupon for the upper of your choice, depending on what model gun you bought.  The P220 only has the .45 option.  The cost is $399.00.

I'm not sure if it has firing pin protection.  I need to research that.  Normally I just count the number of shots.  Also, it's effective to load a blank case as the first round loaded into the magazine.  That will sometimes lock the slide open on the last shot, but sometimes it just jams the case in the slide assembly.  I'm still playing with it.

I went to the range yesterday and ran 200 rounds of Blazer ammo through it.  Worked flawlessly.  The gun is very accurate and a joy to shoot.

Regarding dry firing, I got this from the FAQ's on the Sig web site:

"It is safe to dry-fire our center fire pistols. You would want to use a snap cap or plug if extensive dry-firing is done. Always count your dry-firing in your live fire count to be sure all springs and pins are in top condition. DO NOT intentionally dry-fire any rim fire pistol such as the Mosquito, .22LR conversions or Classic Pistols."

I haven't been dry firing on purpose, so I'm probably OK, but occasionally I'll loose count of the rounds fired and accidently dry fire.  Hopefully that won't  be a problem.  I tried again using a spent case as the first round in the magazine.  All it does is jam the slide open.  It does not lock the slide open.  I don't think I'll do that anymore.  Counting generally works.

I've done a little research, as I too am interested in the 22 conversion for the sig 220. I found  a couple  places that sell aluminum followers which are intended to hold the slide back after the last round. Not sure how well they work though.

Thanks.  I see they have the followers at SigPower.com

Think I'll try a snap cap first and see how that works.
