Help!
« on: June 21, 2010, 05:15:47 PM »
Hey all, I've got a 70's 336c that I'm having a little trouble with.  The buttstock has developed a little up and down wobble, about 1/16th of an inch or so. I cannot move the tang screw at all... and the head is boogered up pretty bad.  :P  So what could be causing the wobble?  The tang screw is a wood screw correct?  I'm at a loss? To replace he screw now I'm going to have to drill it out i suppose.  Ideas?  Thanks in advance

The tang screw is a machine screw.  It screws into the lower tang, squeezing the stock in between.

ok, thanks... to my only option here is an easy-out or whatever they are called to remove messed up screws? I got this gun off of my dad, the screw was a little messed up when i got it and my attempts made it worse.

I don't think an easy-out will help you.  The stuck threads are 2 inches below the screw head.  I would try using a square shank screwdriver with a wrench as low as possible.  Push down as hard as possible and turn the wrench.  Two people make it easier.   Some valve grind compound or other abrasive in the screw slot will reduce slippage.  Maybe an impact driver would work (the kind you hit with a hammer, not an air wrench.)  Hope it turns or the head breaks off.  :)

If that doesn't work, some very careful work with a Dremel grinder or a drill bit can remove the screw head.  Then you can probably remove the trigger guard plate with the rest of the screw where it can be worked on.  This is where you don't want to break it off in the hole.  Soak it with penetrating oil, maybe some heat.  Use vice grips.  Tap on the end while turning.  It will eventually come out.

Awesome thanks man, i see what you are saying.  I Have another screw coming from brownells already, when it arrives I will give that a try.  I have just the dremel bit to remove the head too.  I'll let you know how it goes.  Brent
