7x57JR
« on: April 23, 2010, 01:26:40 PM »
Howdy.

I have the opportunity to buy a drilling in 7x57jr.  I am a fan of 7x57r, so am sorely tempted.  I can't find any information on 7x57jr; could someone shed some light on this caliber, and maybe a source for brass?

Thanks.

Dave

That's a new one on me!

I've heard of 8 x 57 J,  8 X57 JR, 8 x 57 JS , and 8 X 57 JRS, but seven millimetres usually don't require the extra alpha-getti's.

Have you seen the drilling, is are you going on someones description?

The seller indicated stamps on the barrel indicated that designation.  It is a sauer and sons 16/16/7x57JR.  I have asked that he send pics of the proofs so I can find out more.

The "J" & "S" are usually associated with  8x57 Mauser rifles/ammo - as in 8x57J / 8x57JR or 8x57JS / 8x57JSR.

That was because the 8x57 was initially made with a slightly smaller bore than the later rifles with larger bores - which also used the then-new spitzer ("S") bullets.

AFAIK, there has never been such an issue with a 7mm bore - long standardized @ .284" in both the 7x57 & 7x57R.

It could be that a barrel marked "J" has a short-throated chamber, not meant for relatively modern spitzer bullets.
If that's the case,  "normal" 7x57R ammo might be able to be used if the throat is lengthened.

Missed it by that much.  Should have just bought it and then figured it out.

Maybe next time.  Thanks for all of the input.
