Fail Safe vrs Sierria
« on: December 06, 2009, 03:12:31 AM »
I have a quanity of 338 Fail Safes 230gr. and a quanity of 338 sierria 225 Game Kings.

Witch would you use on Eastern Canadain Moose. shots are from 50 - 200 yds?  both shoot in the same group @ 100 yds, and both shoot under 1 1/2"

  Thanks

Take the Fail Safes. Everything else being equal, go for the Premium bullets.

Tough decision but I'd go with the FS.  Last bull I shot was with 180gr partitions in a 300win.  all exited.  If I ever get a Maine moose permit...I'll use my 375HH and 270gr Hornady interlocks just because I can!!

What do you plan to shoot those bullets in? And how well do they perform in that rifle. If a 338-06 I'd go with whichever is most accurate.  If in the 338 win mag or 340 wby I'd hope the Fail Safe were acceptably accurate and go with it.

This is just IMHO, but due to a bit of on the job experience gathered over the years, GO WITH THE FAILSAFE!!!!

In less Sierria has started to make a premimun level bullet that I haven't heard about, they are still a cup & core design.

Not to say they won't shoot and group good, but the Nosler Balistic Tip is know for shooting very well, but I wouldn't use them if I wasn't willing to except a fair amount of possible meat loss.

The Hornady interlock is a step above the cup and core type, and bigger is better, but it sure ain't a Nosler Partition.

Seems to me like there is no choice here.  You have one for practice and one for hunting with the Failsafe, without question, being the very clear winner for the hunt.

Keep em coming!

I don't know how it is there, but here a Moose hunt is either very very expensive,or a once in a lifetime thing you wait years to get a permit for and get one shot at,or both. I would decide what kind of accuracy I needed my rifle to do,then search high and low for every bullet on earth to find the one that could meet or exceed that and had the required (and documented) performance. (I consider documented in this instance both things written from reliable sources,or people I trust saying things like "Ive shot a lot of <insert animal of choice here> with xyz and the results <awesome/good/bad/horrible>") I would then go spend whatever I needed to to make some top notch cartridges with them. Of course that's because I don't yet have a cartridge (or rifle for that matter) that I find perfect. If I did (or I hope, when I do,at least close to it) I would just use that, but I assume hes asking because he too has not found ballistic nirvana yet.
