Opinions on remmington 572 and 552.
« on: March 24, 2010, 05:01:13 PM »
Looking for feedback on the Remington 552 and 572. I've never fired either, but have handled them in gunshops. Forum posts from owners always mention jamming problems for both models. I'd like a 552, any help is appreciated. Thanks.

My dad had a 552 when I was a kid that we always referred to as the "jammin .22". When I got older I took it apart for its first ever really good cleaning. It was pretty cruddy in there. Since then I don't think it's ever missed a lick. I used to run a little gun shop and 99% of the problems with .22's was being dirty. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one.

I bought a 552 many years ago, it's never been cleaned and it lives in my barn.  It has never jammed, even one time and it's pretty accurate, but i can't give you an exact group size, as i've long since forget what it is.  These days it's fired with open sights only and is only used for pest control, but many years ago i kept it scoped and made many pretty long shots on ptarmigan...

Like Alvin said, keep it clean and it's a great gun. I bought a 552 Speedmaster when it first came out . My mom said if I could save 1/2 the price she would pay the rest, it took me all summer to make enough money for 1/2 of it , had it saved by my 14th birthday, got the gun and loved it, I have no idea as to how many thousands rounds fired through it but I don't remember ever having a problem, It would feed anything you load in it. I still have one and I mostly shoot shorts in it, never had a problem. I'm partial but to me it's the best auto loader ever made. shorts, long, long rifle load in any order and never had a failure.... :) :)... Larry

Never shot the 552, but did have a 572 Fieldmaster when I was a kid.  God knows how many rounds thru it, (a lot) but it seldom jammed.

These are both great guns. Like said before the 552 will jam if not keep clean ( as well as most auto's if not keep clean ). I have a old 572 pump from the 50's. It handles great, shoots great and has never jammed on me.

My son has my 572 and it never jammed on me. He shoots it a lot and I've never heard him say it's jammed on him. We do keep it clean.

I bought my son a 572 when he was a young sprout.  He shot it a lot.  Sometimes it jammed and other times it didn't....?  It was a problem that wouldn't go away.  Because of that I'm not a Remington 572 fan.

I just bought a 552 yesterday that was like new. (a 73 vintage rifle).  I cleaned  it good, as it had been fired, not alot i think, but never eaned.  I shot about 350 shots through it today, slow, fast, fast as I could for 15 rounds, and not one jam.

.22 auto's are blow back actions so bits of unburnt powder get dumped inside the action on most designs.  mine had that green/gray color from the coatings they put on the powder.  alot of times you can feel the grit when you manualy cycle the action slowly.

clean them when they get more that just slightly gritty and you won't have a problem,  always use proper fitting hollow ground screwdrivers and none marring tools.. keep in mind that the reciever is a casting. and scratches easily.,  you don't need a hammer or cheater bar to realy tork the screw thot hold the whole thing together. put at bit of moly in the reciever so the barrel, bolt and operating rod slide in snugly but without force.

don't clean too often, because it will get dirty the first time you use it any way, i pull a patch of hoppes #9 through the barrel and then some dry patches.  I wipe the gun down and  and don't worry about complete tear down untill I think i feels gritty enough.  Just something you figure out for your self how much grit you can take.
