Wal Mart 700 30-06
« on: June 20, 2010, 05:13:02 PM »
Well I swore I would never buy another Remington due to horrible past experience. But the wife claimed my trusty Styre 25-06 so I went on the hunt for a new rifle. My local Wally world had a Remington 700 ADL 30-06 with a cheap scope and camo stock for $497.I'm going to replace the scope and start shooting 150-165gr loads. For those of you with this setup or something similar to it what grain bullet works best.Since this was an impulse buy and I havent looked at Remingtons for years I dont even know the twist rate of the barrel. The 30-06 was also something I turned my nose up at because it just seemed boring or too common.Ive come to respect the round for its versatility plus I dont get beat up when I "TRY" to squeeze the trigger.Anyway just excited about the purchase and looking to get positive but honest feed back on the gun. Thanks

I'm currently working up some loads for a buddy's rem 700 adl 30-06, probably similiar to yours.  So far, it seems to like a Nosler 165 bal. tip over 57.0 gr of IMR4350, win cases, WLR.  However, not 100% satisified with its accuracy just yet.  This is Nosler's book max so work up to it.  Its been giving me less than 1.5" groups, sometimes better.  Still changing seating depth to find the sweater spot.
Be mindful of where you place your forearm rest as placing it too far forward seems to "flex" the stock and change the point of impact.  I try and keep the front bag near the recoil lug area.
Best of luck,
Deerandduck

I bought that exact rifle from Walmart.  It would shoot well under MOA with Remington 165 grain Core-Lokts right out of the box.

I recently dropped it into a CDL stock & added a 3-9X40 Nikon Prostaff.  It's the last gun I'd sell in my collection.

Deerandduck and Swampman thanks for your replies. My daughter and I are headed to the range to check it out.Swampman does your rifle have the X trigger? Mine says its adjustable but breaks pretty clean now. I would like it a little lighter. I'll post later how the first range session goes. Thanks again

Mine has the first generation X-Mark Pro.  It is adjustable, but yours probably has the 2nd generation X-Mark Pro which is adjustable without removing the stock.

I've got the remington 700 ADL 'tupperware' stock - it shoots well with handload, 150 grain hornady spire point bullet, H4350, starting load.
Kills deer great!

For deer hunting the Core-Lokts are hard to beat.

In 1994 I had the go under the knife from the recoil of a 700 30-06.  It too had the tupperware stock.  I have shot more guns than I can remember including MANY magnum but I never had a gun kick like that one did.  I have no idea why it was just so bad but you could not hardly stand to sight it in.  About 4 shots is all you could stand.  Shot at a deer and the gun kicked so hard it ruptured the c1 disk in my neck.  All I could do to get out of the woods cause I knew I was hurt bad.  Went to the doc and after several x-rays told me I was the first person to ever walk in his office with a broke neck.  Went to the hospital from his office and had surgery.

I will say that while that gun (for whatever reason) had ungodly amounts of recoil for the size round, it was a shooter and killed many a deer.

Mine kicks about like a .30-30.

You did have the butt of the rifle on your shoulder and not your neck, right??  lol

I think I did. LOL!
I just never knew why that gun kicked so bad.  I now have a Tikka T3 in 30-06 shooting 180 gr loads and the recoil is not as bad.  I will say that Remington did shoot.  I will say too that the Tikka shoots a little tighter groups.

I always loved the 700 ADLs, made in the 1980s, with walnut stocks.  Beautiful rifles, clean lines, tight checkering, very accurate, no problems, and much better looking than the BDL versions.  These were the very best buys for the money I ever saw.  They cost right around $200. Now to get a best buy, you have to pay $400 or so for a rifle with a synthetic stock.  Give me a used 700 ADL any day, and I'll just refinish the stock.

Walmart has a laminated 700 for $500.00.  The new ones are more accurate than old ones.

Wareagleguy, your 700ADL 30/06 sounds as though the recoil lug was broken.  This doesn't happen very often but when it does the rifle will kick you into the next county, figuritively speaking of course.  I had one of these with a walnut stock and it has some recoil when shooting 180 grain bullets but not enough to break a person's neck.  My oldest son has it now and he will never turn loose of that rifle, and I have tried to get it back from him but no dice.

Hey Swampy,  :-)

Even when I say something good about the Remington 700, you wanna get on my case.  :-)

Those old 700 ADLs would shoot 1 inch, right out of the box.  That's all I ever need from a big game rifle. For me, sitting at a bench for hours on end, fooling with handloads, to get a half inch group, is a total waste of time and has little or nothing to with big game hunting.

I must admit that I was not holding the gun in a good position when I shot it and so I was partly to blame.  I knew the gun would kick the crap out of me and I still didn't setup and shoulder the gun correctly and made a shot that sent the recoil into my body and not through the shoulder.  The result was a ruptured disk.

Never thought about the recoil lug.  I wish I really never traded that gun off because it was a shooter!
