Personally I use nothing but 40 grain JHPs. If that won't do it then I need more gun not a different bullet.

I sure agree with GB on this, the 22 Mag is perfect with the 40gr jacketed bullets.  But......... ever notice that a post by GB usually terminates a thread of any discussion?  Larry

I believe that coyotes definitely 100 yards or less and then only well placed shot would be OK, especially on western coyotes.
Eastern yotes are generally larger and the above statement is especially true.
So, IMO the 22 mag is definitely marginal but will get the job done within the above parameters

Apex-

If I were going to hunt coyote with a 22 mag, I think I would use one of the high velocity, light weight bullets for their explosive expansion, in hopes of minimizing the risk of pass thru, and subsequent pelt damage.  I would keep my shots close, under 50 yards, and only take solid, broadside chest cavity shots.  Personally, I use a .204 and a 223 for them.  I like the heavy bullets like the dynapoints in a 22 mag for turkey hunting.  They expand and penetrate without blowing up and damaging meat.  I guess they would work well on coyote if you were not concerned about pelt damage.

I'd not worry about the 40 HP exiting and messing up the hide. I've shot a fair number of canines and felines with the round and never seen an exit yet. Chest shots pretty much never drop them DRT but they can normally be found within 50 yards or less most times a lot less of where they were hit. Blood trail from a .22 mag is gonna be spotty at best or nonexistent.

I prefer head shots personally and find that a properly placed 40 HP to the head is DRT and no unwanted noise in case that matters if ya know what I mean.

I would use either cci maxi mag 40 grain jhps or winchester 40 grain jhps. I shot a young male this past summer spotlighting with the winchester load out of my marlin 883ss. Spotted him out about 175 yards, and was kicking my self for not bringing a (REAL) gun, but luckily was able to coax him in closer. He stopped and I held right on the tip of his nose, he went down like a rock. He was standing at 106 steps, the bullet entered in the center of the neck, killing him instantly.

A few years back I gathered an assortment of 22 mag. ammo and did an expansion test to compare performance. The winchester and cci 40 grain loads penetrated wet newsprint the deepest of all hps tested, the winchesters bettering the cci load by several inches.

I made up jugs of Jello.
and shot all kinds of 22 Mag, 17HMR as well as post halloween cheap pumpkins to see what the various bullet weights and designs did.
The 30 grainers Explode when entering.  Goes in about 2" and makes a 2" ball of scrap.
32 grainers explode on entering and leave a 22 exit.  Goes in and opens up on impact making about a 2" ball of canal as well as scrap but has a cup that will exit the jug.
the 34 JHP Win make a 22 hole and explodes and makes a quarter sized exit in the pumpkins.  Did not have any on the Jello day.
the 40 grainers depending on HP, SP, or FMJ all make a 22 entry hole and either explode 1.5" ball and exit, mushroom .22 entry and a 1.5" ball with a .27 exit hole or just keep on going after flipping about 4" in jello.
We shot into 3 gallon clear plastic jugs pretzels come in and could see wound canals.
the 50 grainers make a 22 hole and just a strait line through the jello and pumpkin.
I was looking for a night time round for my 22 mag on Coyote.

I forgot to mention that I also shot some 33 grain remingtons. The first shot at 50 yards did not expand and was found completely intact. The second shot performed similarly to cci's 30 grain maxi mag+V jhp load, shallow penetration and fragmentation. I would not use this load on large varmints.

We're restricted by law here in Michigan to use only rimfires at night.  I borrow Patty's little .22 Mag H&R Sportster when I go.  Night shooting, the shots are close and the .22 mag is adequate...not ideal.  Daytime, I use everything from .45-70 to .223.  My .308 has killed the most fox and coyotes.  They seldom wiggle.

on the 27th we had clear skys and a full moon so off to the woods i go. i sat in a hunten shack 50 yrds from the chicken pen (coop) at 9:30 the first it was a opossem drt 22 mag 40gr tnt  it was quite till 1:30 and mr. yote head shot below the ear and dehind the eye he made it about 75 yrds the lil hollow point did do the job.   i sat the rest of the nite and seen nothing. however the chicken bones i place on the dirt bike trail 25 yrds from me were gone so i missed something. all in all it was a great nite. so yes the 22mag dose do the job.

Good accurate round, but.  I shot a large 35 + lb tom bobcat with those remington accutip with my marlin micro groove 22mag. Good patient shot 25 yards.  He jumped about 5 foot in the air, bit at his side where the bullet went (as if to bite whatever it was that was gittin him) then hit the ground running.  No blood, no cat.  I switched to the winchester jhp in 34 grain.  they are fast, and accurate.  I havent used them on predators yet, but they put a big hole in 3/4 inch treated plywood...

I just recently shot my first yote with a 22mag.  I did it from around 30yds with a 40gr HP CCI maximag.  personally, i would keep the 22mag limited to close quarters hunting and night hunting when it comes to yotes.  i have hoever, had GREAT success with the 22mag and coons, and groundhogs.  I think it would be a great fox round.
It's all a hot mess...........
